My family installed a new wifi. I'm paranoid they will be able to see the websites I go to. Can I use TOR/a VPN to ensure they can't see?

My parents installed new wifi and they want me to connect to it but I’m paranoid they will be able to see me watching pom. I’m new to TOR and VPNs. How can I access pomhub for example without them knowing? Can I use TOR to access it? Do I need a VPN only and no TOR? Do I need both TOR and VPN?

You shouldn’t be watching that type of content at all. Its a good thing if they find and put an end to it. It can be very addictive and will not do you any favors.

there was no reason for them to install a new wifi if they could spy on you in the previous one, since you didn’t use tor.

Yes you can use Tor or a VPN to access porn without they knowing you are accessing those websites but they might see zjat yu are using Tor or a VPN so you should use bridges to hide it.

PS: there is nothing wrong with watching porn if it is consensual porn with adult actors.

Mullvad VPN is your friend

Solution: i hear blowup dolls are making a comeback

Has it ever occurred to you that there is a non-trivial possibility that your parents can be right?

is it not simpler to just…use incognito browsing tabs on like chrome or some shit am i missing somthing

You probably don’t need Tor, though it is certainly “stronger”. That being said, don’t use both at the same time. If you’re going to use Tor and a VPN 99.99% of the time you should just use Tor.

If their day job is OpSec, then worry. If not, carry on, but understand the long term mental consequences.

I suspect that trying to watch video over Tor is still pretty painful much of the time. And sites may not let you use them at all if you’re coming from Tor (also sometimes true for VPNs, but less so).

A VPN will do what you want if used correctly, but may be less foolproof than something like the Tor bundle. You have to make sure that everything goes through the VPN, including stuff like DNS queries.

Assuming either a VPN or Tor concealed your use of Pornhub, it still wouldn’t hide the fact that you were using the VPN or Tor itself. They can’t see what you’re ultimately doing, but they can see that you connected to a Tor or VPN relay. That may matter to you. Tor bridges help with that, but tend to be oversubscribed, aren’t perfectly reliable if they’re really trying, and will slow things down even more.

It’s always better to just use a network connection that isn’t controlled by whoever you’re trying to evade. Maybe you have a phone with a large mobile data plan.

If they have access to the device you’re using to browse, and are willing/able to snoop around on there or install spyware, then you have issues beyond whatever happens on the WiFi AP/router/whatever. Exactly what those issues are depends on what kind of device it is.

If it’s a PC, and if it’s just porn browsing, then–

  • Using Tails will fix almost all of your realistic exposures… but Tails forces you to use Tor, which as I said, may have unpleasantly bad performance. You would still be exposed to things like hardware keyloggers and surveillance cameras in the room.

  • If you use the Tor browser bundle, it will leave fewer traces on the PC than a “normal” browser. Maybe nothing that could actually be found. But again Tor is slow.

  • If you use a regular browser with a VPN, you can get most of the same tracelessness with “private” or “incognito” mode… but only if you never make a mistake and use the wrong mode. Be aware that, say, Chrome will report a ton of stuff to Google even in incognito mode… but on the other hand Google isn’t going to give that stuff to your parents.

Just remember, porn is NOT real life.

Couldnt agree more. If you’re younger and seeing this, you probably wont care or realize it, but porn has devastating long term effects on your brain. As someone who’s 18 now, and has been watching porn since 12-13 its truly one of the worst habits I’ve ever developed.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of routers and isps tend to automatically log everything, and obtaining those logs aren’t too difficult.

Trust this guy, sounds like he’s got some experience

You’re not the one to judge someone based on your own personal bias. Even though it can be addictive, it’s still not a big deal for most people. If the person affected by the porn to the point of self-destruction, then it means that this person has more drastic mental problems apart from porn.

Its a good thing if they find and put an end to it.

This is a literal psycho approach. You don’t know his family, you don’t know their religious background. Yeah, them finding out would put an end to it, most likely by putting an end to their child’s life.

Edit: I’ve just realized that I already had a discourse with you on i2p stuff a month ago; this world is really small, or some unknown deity destined me to argue with you every time I visit reddit.

Has it ever occurred to you that there is a non-trivial possibility that your opinions on this matter are not interesting to anybody at all?

That only helps on your computer by deleting the cache from your browser.

That’s only locally not storing search data, it does nothing to hide network queries and traffic

So either one will prevent them from seeing me go to pomhub? But I just can’t use both at the same time? Is there a reason why I shouldn’t use both at the same time? Does it affect streaming speed/quality?
