I remember a few years ago, Avast was caught selling their customers’ data. They were considered one of the most unsafe antiviruses available, because they demonstrated that customers couldn’t trust them, and this bled out into antiviruses owned by the same company like AVG.
Now any time I try looking up antivirus lists, Avast is always considered number one, while AVG is quite high up.
What the heck happened? Did everyone just… forget about their shitty practices?

Avast the antivirus has pretty good protection. Avast the company (Gen Digital) is shitty. Those aren’t really competing ideas.
Avast av wasn’t the issue they had a browser and a program called avast one that was recording data and that was being sold. There’s nothing wrong with the antivirus it actually works just as good as the decent ones And every single company sells data. They just don’t get caught.
Avast works well. Just don’t pay for it or give them any info. You can use the program without giving any info
Then how am I supposed to trust any antivirus I use? EVERY list I look at suggest Avast.
Fuck… Kaspersky stopped working, everyone’s suggesting Avast, my favourite websites are refusing me access if I use a VPN… what am I supposed to do? Why is trying to protect myself and my privacy so hard?
I’ve been using Malwarebytes, and I recently downloaded Avira.
I tried BitDefender but it wouldn’t let me download without uninstalling Malwarebytes so fuck that.
You only ever need to use 1 antivirus, malwarebytes is really good, or you can also just stick to Windows Defender.
For fuck’s sake, I was told that Malwarebytes isn’t an antivirus, it’s an antimalware, and you need one of each.
I can’t even get consistent information anymore.
Malwarebytes is an antivirus but with the free version, you don’t get real time protection and hence it is safe to use Malwarebytes with another real time antivirus.
Malwarebytes is an antivirus. I highly recommend it, they have improved a lot.

Antivirus and antimalware are the same kind of program. They are just marketing terms used to brand this type of software differently.
