Why doesn't plex run when I have my vpn enabled

I have Malwarebyte Privacy VPN. It allows me to allow specific applications to run around the VPN while all others get encrypted. Sometimes for some devices at some locations it works fine with the vpn enabled (no exceptions yet). But it’s not consistent at all. So I made an exception for the 3 programs that had plex in their name. But it still doesn’t work properly. Even on the same network I was having problems. My minecraft server exception works great. Does anyone know how to fix this. It says something along the lines of not able to get a secure connection.

Edit: I know I don’t need a vpn for plex… which is why I’m trying to it through.

Because you’re blocking port access through the vpn. Some let you open specific ports, some want you to pay extra for it, some don’t support it at all. I don’t know about the malware bytes vpn, but it’s likely that you’re just closing off access to the port plex needs. No need to put a vpn in front of plex though, it’s content gets encrypted already.

You don’t need a VPN for Plex, I’m not sure if Malwarebytes has “Split Tunneling” but on ProtonVPN I just added the Plex Media Server application and port forwarded via my router settings.

It sounds like you have some version of split tunneling, make sure you exempt the Plex Media Server and double check port forwarding through your router.

How do I figure out what port it’s going through? Malwarebytes privacy does let me specify ports but I don’t know which one I would need.
I know it doesn’t need a vpn, but my server does alot of things and some of them need to be encrypted.

What port? If it’s not a universal port for everyone, how do I find the right port?

Check your remote access settings in Plex, usually it is 32400. Configure that in your router if need be and make sure Plex in all aspects is exempt from VPN.
