Whats with the high GPU usuage?
It’s just what you think it would be, hardware acceleration in openvpn.
If you google this topic generically, you see that many people have this question “why does my ____ vpn use my GPU”. And then you get into the “OpenVPN nows supports hardware acceleration”, AES-NI, AES-GCM, SafeXcel etc. If you want to disable it “Openvpn hardware disable” or just research prioritization.
This should not be bullying you graphics card, for example when you are playing games, it should be offloading opportunistically. But perhaps you should look into configuring openvpn to suit your needs.
Forgot to state that my GPU is a 1660 Super
Maybe are you downloading something big? I assume it uses the gpu for encrypt/decrypt traffic.
Also note that the protonvpn app on windows uses some hardware acceleration to draw the map/graphs.
If you minimize it to the system tray (close it, so it’s only running in the background) - you’ll notice gpu usage go down somewhat.
maybe proton render an great connexion using your gpu

I wouldn’t say that 2.3% is particularly high, nevertheless a VPN constantly encrypts and decrypts all data going into and out of your device and that needs some good CPU power to be done real-time.
In ProtonVPN you can go into the settings and go to the advanced tab. In there you will find an option for Hardware Acceleration. Turn this off and your GPU usage should be lowered massively.
Hope that helps you or works for you.
Another thing to note… Windows of late has been mucking about with GPU performance on NVidia cards… If you wish to sort that out (lowering my GPU from 100% usage to 0%) then go into Display Settings->Graphics Settings->Turn Off Hardware -Accelerated GPU scheduling… what a massive difference this makes and no performance impact by doing so… only performance relief
Awe yes thank you for this explaining. I was not aware that openVPN supported hardware acceleration.
Please reread the title. I stated GPU usage which is at 20%?
Wouldnt 20% be a bit high just for constant encrypts and decrypts processing?
Misread, sorry. Not sure why GPU is being used at all. Maybe u/protonvpn can shed some light?
