Hello…I was in Florida for 8 days on vacation last week My company approved the vacation with the agreement I could work. IT put a VPN on my computer. My company is in NC. When I logged on the internet (WiFi at my sisters’ home) ran incredibly slow. Then I tried to dial out on Ring Central (software used to call out) and the static was so bad it hurt my ears. I was unable to work. I got fired today. Do you think or is it possible my by company did this purposely? Their case que was low so I feel like they did this purposely to save money.
Nothing about this makes jack shit sense. Reads like a first generation AI story.
You got fired for other reasons, not because of a VPN.
First of all, what type of horse crap vacation is that where you have to work?
Also you don’t know how good your sister’s internet is. It may be bad. VPN does make things slower every time.
it’s very odd a vpn will behave that badly. What kind of VPN was installed? Did you reach out to IT while travelling to troubleshoot?

With 20:20 hindsight it’s easy to say this but did you test your connection speed via the VPN before going on holiday from your home for example to see if it actually worked.
Did you do a speed test at your sister’s home with and without the VPN?
This might prove who is at fault
I know it’s too late in the day but might have saved your job
Aren’t VPNs out of date though? They just add network lag - are people looking at ZTNA?
My sister has a business she runs from home.
- Its not a vacation if you’re working.
- Thats not the reason you were fired, there were other problems.
- VPN’s always degrade network quality, the extent of how much it affects will depend on who’s hosting the VPN and the resources allocated.
Can’t speak to if they did this on purpose, but it seems unlikely. If you were connecting to a local office VPN, the office may have insufficient upload speeds, which can throttle your Internet connection even if your sister has a good service. There are configuration options on your computer to choose to not send all traffic over the VPN, which allows you to still tunnel network resources, but use your remote connection for full speeds for your regular Internet.
Ring Central shouldn’t be dependent on the VPN so the fact that had bad connection too seems to indicate her Internet was crap.
This story doesn’t make a damn lick of sense
wrong vpn provider, try something else
To reply to everyone who misunderstood the post. I worked for an outbound call center. They measure by metrics. There was a write up prior to vacation (where it was agreed that I would voluntarily work some mornings while in Ft. Lauderdale). The company wasn’t getting cases in and they were janky anyway. We called for dates of services for claimants on their workers compensation cases. They were digging more into claimants past medical history which is illegal under HIPAA. My metrics sucked. Thank GOD I’m a paralegal by trade and have over 20 years experience working independently in a continuous flow environment versus a plantation. I took the job because I needed a break from the legal world and taking medical billing & coding for the second half of my career. The job is just that a job. My question I admit was vague. While on vacation the VPN that the company added prior to me leaving on vacation seemed janky. I was unable to work and lost pay. I was never making excuses. I know that I wasn’t meeting expectations and don’t care because I’ve been so blessed that I’ve never had to work in a production based environment. To be monitored all day is antiquated but I did what I had to do. I was simply (but failed to do so) asking can the company rig some isht up to ensure that I couldn’t work? Their cases were low. I simply think they didn’t want to pay even that little. I came back to work and worked a week and then the next week got fired. AGAIN, I have several skills and loads of experience. I’m not upset about some bs company canning me. They actually are losing cases. Their problems are bigger than mine. To those who insinuated that I www saying they crashed the VPN to fire me is crazy. I take responsibility for low production and thank GOD I don’t have to work jobs like that ever again. Most of you were rude, insensitive and projected. My question simply, can a VPN or remote access be rigged to not allow employee to work? The company was pretty good about flexibility, I wouldn’t have gotten fired because I was unable to work due to bad VPN. Most of you are probably poor managers who don’t even try to listen to your employees without assuming or projecting!
they fired you? i feel like most companies are gracious with technical errors. DO you have a history of not doing work? are you disliked by coworkers?
You can read my CLEAR response.
I never said it was because of a VPN. I said the VPN didn’t allow me to work during my vacation when it was agreed upon that I could work. Nice try. I don’t make excuses. I know why I got fired as 4 other people did. I can take responsibility for that. Low productivity. I’m trying to figure out negative know it all if they purposely rigged the VPN so I couldn’t earn pay. The fact you distorted my post says you are miserable.
Hey calm down. They didn’t make me do anything on vacation. I chose to because I wanted to not use pto. I’m only worried about VPN. I never implied they forced me to work.
Yep. I’m not sure what kind of VPN. It’s the generic one. He came into the system virtually and said my internet was to slow but my sister and her husband had no issues. Also I went to a business office and they still said that the internet was slow but this was a business suite which I’m sure there internet runs fast. I feel like the company did that purposely. Which seems like paranoia but now I’m fired today.
