I heard that you need a plus plan to torrent with ProtonVPN.
I tried torrenting under a free connection and it worked fine (albeit a bit slow, of course). So is it only that I cannot torrent “safely” with a free plan, or is torrenting supposed to be disabled entirely under a free connection?
Update: Thanks for the answers. Don’t worry, what I downloaded via torrent was perfectly legal, i was just curious.
Both, P2P detection leads ProtonVPN to block any internet access from you on their end. Therefore, you either found a way to hide your torrents from ProtonVPN (but not likely) or your torrents never passed through the VPN tunnel (leaking your own IP address).
In any case, please do not use the free plan for torrenting.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing is only available using one of our paid Proton VPN Plus, Proton Unlimited, or Visionary (legacy users only) plans. If you are on a Free plan and wish to torrent, you need to upgrade to one of these plans.
Correct - As others have mentioned, you can’t use a free Proton VPN account to download torrents. Your connection will be blocked on detecting P2P (torrent) traffic. Although your torrent client might show download activity, it will ultimately stop as the connection will be blocked.
Only by upgrading to a Plus plan can you use Proton VPN to hide your IP address during a torrent download.
This actually is possible but you need a PC and smartphone. Install Proton on the phone, in my case Android. Plug it in and enable tethering over USB. Yes I know modern Android doesn’t share a VPN connection by default over USB. That’s why you install Every Proxy, enable it in HTTP/HTTPS mode and go into your Windows settings and set your proxy server to the port and one of the IPs it gives you. Now all your tethered traffic to the computer actually goes through the VPN and don’t ask me how but torrenting works 100%. IDK if you can get Every Proxy for an iphone but I assume any proxy app that supports HTTP/S would do the same trick. You can go to one of those check your IP sites to confirm it works by seeing if it’s the same as what ProtonVPN reports.
But in OP’s case I don’t know the setup but yeah, whatever he was doing definitely didn’t have his torrents go through the VPN. And as for my workaround I wouldn’t be surprised if they find a way make it stop working eventually.
I know I’m late but I’v been torrenting quite a bit with the free plan and it disables my internet for web browsing, but the torrent continues. I imagine it leaked my IP but no one has bothered me about it. Is it okay to continue? Will anything happen?
I tried to make this work so much and I couldn’t. What port do I set the proxy to? The proton VPN doesn’t give its port only the IP
Edit- so I found a port number in the every proxy app and even then I couldn’t get it to work. In the every proxy app it has the IP address as 0. It gives me options but only for my real IP not the IP from Proton. I feel like im super close but I couldn’t figure this out.
Yeah I use mullvad with no issues doing pirate stuff. People say mullvad is the worst to do that with but I never have issues. But I heard good stuff about this one
I think Mullvad main disadvantage for torrenting is the lack of port forwarding. Something Proton has.
For a year long deal Proton with a deal price is definitely better, then Mullvad.
