Thoughts on this? I don’t really understand why it’s different to a VPN. Claims to work well in Cn.
It uses Trojan which is a proxy protocol similar to XTLS and others in the Shadowsocks family. They do generally work well in China, though much of that is due to the IPLC lines they get somehow (since they provide a service illegal in China, and IPLC line requires a legal business presence in China to setup, I’ve always wondered how they get them and how reliable they are in the long-term).
The main difference between a proxy and a VPN is that a proxy works on a higher protocol layer - it proxies TCP or UDP connections, while a VPN passes along packets at the lower IP layer. That means that some types of traffic can only be sent through GFW via a VPN. But for most regular use cases they are about the same.
That said this particular one looks pretty dubious to me. The “SimpleLink vs VPN” comparison table is full of misinformation (it says VPNs usually have pings of over 1000ms which is ridiculous) and claims 110k+ downloads despite their 4-year old iOS listing only having 6 ratings! It also doesn’t appear to offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, which is the industry standard.
You could give Wallpunch a try instead. Pings to Singapore or Tokyo are generally around 60ms, it is very stable in China, and it’s a VPN so it works with any type of traffic. Plus we offer a money-back guarantee and it is cheaper with the current discount code - only $3/month.
No Linux or router support
This service DOES NOT WORK FOR CHINA.
It does not disguise your traffic and you cannot access all services and websites. Your google search results will be redirected to Google HK ad be displayed in Chinese. Any streaming services that limit location access will be UNUSABLE. Customer service replied that “technically it works”, despite ‘attempts’ to troubleshoot and then replied, “SORRY, WE DON"T DO REFUNDS.” I asked them to show me the documentation that I agreed to and they provided me with NOTHING. They said they need to remotely access my computer in order to prove that it doesn’t work even though i provided them with multiple screenshots and their own tests duplicated my results. BTW I have previous experience as an IT professional. While I was in their customer service chat box, I was typing a question and before I sent the message, they replied to my question. The trustworthiness of their website itself is also questionable. After I asked for documentation, I attempted to log in to my account on their website and the website was down, which makes me believe there was an alteration made.
I found the speed and reliability is quite satisfying. They said they use a private line that doesn’t pass through the Great Firewall and vigilance, probably that causes such good performance… I am still testing this product. hopefully its can last long…
That stuff about layers is simply not true. If you use TUN mode with Clash for Windows what traffic can’t be sent via Shadowsocks?
Does this service work normally with Windows PC? My problem with Clash based VPNs and proxys is that they only work normally on Android. On Windows they work partially, which means only my browsers go through Clash but programs don’t. TUN doesn’t help as well. I never managed to fix this issue.
So I’m a bit confused (hence in the dumbclub lol) … is the simplelink a VPN or not … or some kind of hybrid … for those inside the GFW?
There’s so many ABC this and ABC that and I get confused when someone says LGBTPQYZ LOL
Taking a look at what you do
Any updates? Still consider it good?
Shadowsocks (even with Clash’s TUN mode on) only proxies TCP and UDP traffic. It won’t be able to send ICMP (ping) packets, for example.
Yes, still working like a charm
Mine died beginning of December 2024, both windows and Android. No customer service response either.
What am I missing? This is a pure Shadowsocks connection…
Hmm, interesting. When you try the ping with Clash on, google.com resolves to 198.18.0.12, which is a bogon IP address. Also, the round trip time for that second ping is 0ms!
I don’t actually know what is going on - perhaps Clash intercepts the ping packets in TUN mode - but you’re definitely still not pinging the google.com servers. Maybe try pinging the original IP (142.251.42.238) directly both times and see what happens.
Yeah works fine with TUN on and doesn’t with off.
