I have had Surfshark for almost a year now, and have used it with zero issues for that time, but approximately a month ago it has suddenly started causing the download speeds in qBittorrent to drop to zero when I am connected to any access point. I tried utilizing their live support, and after changing some settings it seemed to be resolved, but now a few days later I am back to the same issue. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, were you able to fix it? Worst case scenario I get a different VPN service, as my account has only been paid through next month.
I don’t have that issue
I’m using qBittorrent daily no problem. What specific settings you changed?
What protocol are you using, OpenVPN or Wireguard?
The live tech support recommended I switch my protocol from Automatic to OpenVPN (UDP), which momentarily resolved it, but by the next morning it was doing to exact same thing. I tried changing it to Wireguard, but no success.
At the moment, Wireguard, with no resolution. The live support person/bot recommended that I change it to OpenVPN (UDP), which seemed to resolve it for the moment, but by the next day it was doing the same thing again. I can start qBittorrent without my VPN on and be getting DL speeds of upwards of 5mbps, but as soon as I connect to the VPN it just consistently drops until all my speeds drop to zero, but with no change in my web browsing speeds.
Oh it drops for me too if I start or stop VPN after qBittorrent. There are 2 solutions:
- always start qBittorrent after starting VPN
- bind qBittorent to VPN interface (settings → advanced → network interface). I highly recommend that anyway, to be sure that torrents never escape around VPN
Have a look at this thread. Not sure if this is ‘it’, but I feel MTU settings may sometimes interfere.

Edit: user Orangerot findings and feedback.
Thanks so much! This worked perfectly.
