Should I always use VPN when hosting or downloading a torrent?

I’m new about torrenting but I wanted to host a torrent file(is that what you call it), like i want to host a game file using torrenting to make it easier for my friend to download because some storage providers like google drive detects its pirated and also its only 15GB which some games is more over that size. Should I use a VPN to be safe and seed the file? Will my ISP detect it that im seeding (and torrenting)?
And maybe suggest me a cloud storage where i could put game files that they don’t detect it as pirated and that has plenty of storage capacity.

If you live in third world country like brazil its not necessary.
Come to brazil lmao

Yes you should or you’ll get copyright infringement letters straight to your inbox, unless your country doesn’t care.

If you’re in the USA or other western countries, yes you need a VPN. You should also ensure your torrent client is set to only use the VPN network.

I’ve read some threads that you should use a VPN, well ok but I was wondering should I use NordVPN and it’s P2P server? And one more question, some threads say that you need to set your torrent client that to use the vpn only because if not even your vpn is active it can still leak through to your real internet, I use BitTorrent how I set it up?

I’ve downloaded games, movies and music through torrents without the use or a single VPN for a dozen years now, and I haven’t encountered a single issue. And for the record, I live in France, so not the most copyright-free country you can find, especially with EU laws.

Unless you live in a country where copyright infringments are severely enforced, people telling you you absolutely need a VPN for torrent downloads are blowing things out of proportions tenfolds.

If you’re in Canada don’t worry about it just do. Seeding I don’t do so in your case just to be safe I’d use a VPN

Downloading isn’t really the issue. It’s the seeding that gets you in trouble usually

I got windscribe. $3 a month and it can set a VPN tunnel for your computer.

Basically, when it is switched on you can not access the internet unless you go through the VPN. So if the connection ever goes you won’t go through your normal internet, it will just block all traffic. Meaning no chance of anything slipping out and reaching your ISP.

Bulgaria: Piracy??? What is that??

lmao forgot about that ive been dowloading a game for 20 mins without a vpn yikesss

Best comment, set in torrent client to only use vpn! Will prevent a ip leak. You’d be better off with a vpn 80$ for roughly 2-3 years. If you host, you’re essentially distributing the copyrighted material. America, and slightly Canada care about this.

There’s a Google sheet doc out there that tells you who operates and owns these vpns. Nord is unanimously seen as dog dookie. Gimme an hour or so and I could find you that list. That said, Mullvad is the most user friendly-minded one I’ve seen so far

Well im not a professional but following advice over multiple subreddits I suggest you get Mullvad vpn. Mullvad supports torrents and seeding and it’s €5 euro a month (or dollar… I think)

Edit: You MUST use a vpn if torrenting, forgot to mention this.

This is true, I’m from UK - never used a VPN once in the 10+ years of pirating.

No idea why people are worried.

Downloading or torrenting? If torrenting worst thing that could happen is a copyright infringement email from your ISP. That’s the worst. If so just remember your VPN next time. If you just downloaded directly then don’t expect anything from your ISP.

in advanced settings(?) (not sure) then set your network interface to whatever your vpn is called

In qbitorrent there is a drop down menu you can select in the “Advanced” tab. The option is called “Network Interface.” The name of correct network depends on the VPN and operating system. I also like using the vpn killswitch.

Pretty sure the multi thread has good VPNs no?

in US you will get a message from your ISP almost immediately trying to do that :person_shrugging:. Basically they send you a warning stating that they will take action the next time it happens. Not sure if this is just a bluff but they send a notice with exactly what you were trying to download and from where so I wouldn’t risk it for the biscuit.
