Hello. Guys. So I use a paid subscription of Ipvanish for my VPN. So I’ve read a lot of posts how socks5 isn’t really good at hiding torrenting from your isp. That way we don’t get the annoying letters in the mail telliing us to stop downloading TV shows etc lol
I think the main reason people do the socks5 proxy setup (as I have been too) is that it’s a simple setup to add the info from Ipvanish to whatever torrent client settings page like uTorrent or qbitorrent. But whats the better way to use my vpn then?
Before we even look at my torrent client I do already have Ipvanish installed and running on the computer that I use to torrent of course and it’s on. But is there a better option of how to set up my Ipvanish VPN and torrenting without switching to a different VPN service and or using the socks5 way?
I should also note I’m in Canada and in the past for mablny years I used Ipvanish and uTorrent witj socks5 and had no issues with my iso so I assumed this setup was great and working lol but maube just got lucky. Anyone have a somewhat better way to setup my Ipvanish instead? Thanks for any help!!
Use qBittorent and in the advanced settings bind qBittorrent to your VPN interface and you’ll be fine. Unsure if your VPN supports port forwarding but you can also adjust the port in qBittorent for faster seeding.
This is all you really need for an effective setup.
Ok so this would be safer and more secure than using the proxy settings in qbitorrent? As some are saying it doesn’t make things private simply setting it up the way Ipvanish website shows. Befire bfllll
By chance do you have any steps I will need to do to bind things? And also it looks like Ipvanish doesn’t support port forwarding. From their website:
QUOTE
Due to our NAT firewall, anyone trying to allow outside access to their computers or running programs that require port forwarding for access while connected to our service, will not be able to route (port forward) that access through our VPN. The vast majority of our users do not do this, and will not be affected.
If you don’t port forward, I am pretty sure you will not be able to seed torrents at all.
To bind qBittorrent, first connect to vpn, go to tools, options, advanced, look for Network interface and choose IPvanish. This will prevent qBittorrent from making any connections unless the VPN is connected. You can use a killswitch on top of this, but this is the “standard” configuration and most secure way to do it.
Thanks a lot. I’m curious if I can use your tips as well as ipvanishes website current settings for qbitorrent using socks5 too? Or should I delete all those settings and just go your way? Here’s ipvanishes steps to set up the VPN on QBITORRENT but as we discussed above, most are saying the way Ipvanish says to do it, the isp can still see what is being downloaded I guess. Here’s their settings guide:

I never setup a vpn on qBittorrent as socks5. I use proton and I binded the client and connect to the vpn on its app and I have never gotten a letter from my ISP about torrenting. I am unsure if socks5 setup is good or not, but I imagine it would work just as well if they recommend it.
Yah it’s weird I agree as you said Ipvanish recommends it yet when I read subreddits online many people state that supposedly using Socks5 doesn’t hide anything from the isp when torrenting so it’s weird.
I’ll try to research a bit more and hopefully others will post in here cause yes I’m like you, I assume if Ipvanish makes their own guide, a person would think this is safe for torrenting yet many comments in reddit etc state it does not hide torrents so I’m left confused lol
Hopefully more people who have tested this out or had issues in the past will reply here!!
And same with me for no letter etc. I’ve used the Socks5 method on uTorrent too with Ipvanish in the past and for over 5 years never got a letter either so I’m confused why many posts say not to use Socks5… So confusing lol
Don’t fix what’s not broken I guess lol
