Network drives not connected after disconnect

Every time I connect to the VPN client I lose access to my local network and my network drives in the Windows explorer - as expected. But when I disconnect from the VPN, close it completely and terminate the vpn service I still can’t access my local network or network drives. I have to reboot my PC every time. Is there a solution for this?

This really depends on how your VPN is configured. You don’t necessarily have to lose access to local resources when connected to the VPN. This totally depends on your config. Once you disconnect, however, you should regain local access.

I’d recommend investigating how your VPN is configured. In the meanwhile, you should be able to do a ipconfig /release and /renew to get your local access back. That’s really all you’re doing when you reboot.

That sounds like your VPN host software is poorly made or missing a configuration.

I own a VPN start-up company which is in BETA, and my application has the exact feature that allows you to control local network access functions, so you could create a “list” of your local network IPs and then exclude them from the VPN. So maybe check if your VPN has something like that!

I have this problem with the Cisco Anyconnect VPN client. Policy disables access to my LAN while connected to VPN. However when I disconnect from the VPN at least one of my mapped drives is not accessible and I get a Windows error message even though the share is visible. I spent over an hour troubleshooting this yesterday. I rebooted all my equipment. It wasn’t until I cold booted my laptop that I was able to access the share again.

I don’t have another laptop to test to see if the issue is on my laptop or the NAS. But the problem occurs after using the Cisco VPN client on Windows 10. If I don’t have to use the VPN, my mapped drives are stable.
