IPLeak.net shows my IP despite being connected to a VPN when testing torrent address detection

I use SurfShark as my VPN on mac and when connected, IPLeak.net shows the VPN server’s IP. Although when I test torrent address detection, IPLeak.net displays my IP and not the VPN’s. I use qbittorrent as my torrent client if that’s relevant. Any ideas on why my IP is being exposed despite being connected to a VPN and how I can fix this issue? Thanks!

Hey, you need to bind your torrent client to your VPN network interface. It’s in advanced settings. If not, your client might bypass the VPN. Are you using a PC or a Mac ?

It shows your computer’s IP or you ISP’s IP?? If your computer, then that doesn’t matter.

This is the first time I heard about this issue!

Did you try it on another device too?

Maybe try a different torrent client. It may have revealed the IP somehow. Just tested this with windscribe and was fine so could also be an issue with surfshark and torrents or with just that client. Windscribe has a completely free trial you can check if you get the same results.

I’ve been torrenting with surfshark for ages, have not received a single letter, so I’m sure something’s off with your setup. Have you tried to chat to their support?

Try this website, which is much more straightforward than IPLeak.

Yeah, it’s the full SurfShark client, not just a browser extension.

Allrighty, my bad. Here’s what you need to do : find your VPN network interface (open a command prompt and use the “IPconfig” command. Use the command with VPN on, then with VPN off to find the name of the interface (e.g. ethernet3). Then go to your torrent client (I use Qbittorrent), advanced settings. You should find an option to connect your client only through a selected network interface. Select you VPN interface then relaunch your client, which should now only work through the VPN. Double check with an IP.magnet just to be sure and you’re done.

He said Mac. Some torrent clients are nasty, they might sell your data and whatnot. The OP have to research best torrent clients for Mac

My ISP’s IP, I believe. I received a DMCA notice from my ISP for torrenting despite the VPN being on.

Good advice! I tried it with Vuze and it seems to be working now!

What torrent client do you use? I tried chatting with SurfShark support, but unfortunately, they couldn’t seem to help me.

Thanks for your advice. It worked. I went to QBitTorrent Advanced Settings. Surfshark Cust Service told me to switch the “Network Interface” setting to ethernet2 or e2, however that was wrong. For me it should have been set to “utun2”. And then I changed "Optional iP Address option to inet address which was one of the options. Now the torrent only leaks the VPN ip address in the host country and not my personal. Thank you all for your replies!

The easy fix is to “bond” qbittorrent to the VPN adapter / IP address. It is a setting in preferences… if you have traffic then it MUST use the VPN.

for me in Qbittorrent Advanced Settings i changed Network Interface to utun2 and I changed Optional IP address to the address for utun2 shown in the drop down box. It allowed my torrents to work and only leaked the VPN’s IP in the host country, not my personal IP.
