iCloud private relay thinks I’m in turkey (I’m not)

I got a message on my iPhone saying iCloud Private Relay isn’t available in Turkey, but I’m not in Turkey. When I check my public IP (IPv4 & IPv6), they show the correct country.

Has anyone else had Private Relay think they’re in the wrong country? I’m in the EU so if my day was going through turkey (either thanks to my isp or apple) I guess I have a right to complain. And no, no vpn, Apple Store location etc. not in anywhere it shouldn’t be.

Is this anything I need to worry about?

Idk but I’d subscribe to as many things as possible before it gets fixed since you don’t pay jack shit with turkiye as loc because of the inflation.

Is it possible you are from turkey? Or does your Apple-ID points into that direction? Do you maybe have a Turkish SIM or number?

I personal used iCloud Private Relay but never had any problem.

geolocation by IP isn’t a perfect thing. you may have checked your public IP and found it to be non-Türkiye but the private relay service may be using a different geolocation provider. try looking up on maxmind and 5-10 other providers, as many as you have the patience to find and try it on.

it’s nothing you need to worry about from a privacy angle. i mean except that you can’t get private relay service.

Go to iPhone settings, iCloud, Private Relay, IP address Location and make sure you have ‘maintain general location selected’. If this is already selected then change this to ‘use country and time zone’.

I have nothing to do with turkey aside from a visit maybe 2 years ago. On mobile data, no issues

Well, if your iPhone tells you that it can not be activated because it issn’t available in turkey, something is causing this.

I can only guess, but because the notification comes from iCloud you may check your Apple Account. Maybe you have something setup that makes iCloud think you are in turkey. Like language settings, or a Turkish payment method or something.

Oh and I guess you also DON’T have a Turkish SIM?

From an iPhone/iCloud setting perspective everything looks good. Seems to me more likely it’s on the ISP side (or private relay itself) but no idea what. My isp using Turkish servers, recycled IPs…

That may be the problem.
