I want the option to use VPN and Tor and I want to do it the right way. I use Mullvad on Linux and there is a tool that can launch applications excluded from the VPN traffic. It is quite straightforward to use with browsers such as Firefox, but I don’t get how to use it with Tor Browser. I cannot look up my IP address and see if I am excluded from the VPN traffic since Tor Browser shows the IP of the last node. Does anyone know how to use Tor and exclude it from VPN? And is there a way to test and see if Tor Browser is connecting to the first node using the VPN or the ISP so I could be sure I’m not using Tor+VPN?
The VPN should have settings to let certain programs through, unmolested. Look for “split tunneling” or something similar in the settings of Mullvad.
The thing is that I seem to be able to start the browser using split tunneling, but how do I know that it really works? I can’t just do a check on one of those whatismyip sites. It shows the exit node IP and not the entry node. Is there a way to do that?
If you were going through the VPN, you wouldn’t get an exit node IP you would get a VPN IP address, right?
No. We are talking about Tor Browser, not Firefox. In my understanding, this is what happens:
If I use no VPN, then I connect like this: me (IP address given by ISP) > node 1 > node 2 > node 3.
If I use VPN, then I connect like this me > me (IP address given by VPN) > node 1 > node 2 > node 3.
I can only check the IP of node 1, 2, 3. But how do I know if I connect to node 1 using an address from my ISP vs VPN?
I’m guessing no one understood what you meant but I’m trying to find out the same thing. Did you ever get an answer or are you just taking it on faith that the mullvad-exclude torbrowser-launcher command worked successfully?
I just ended up using mullvad-exclude, but it is annoying because I can’t tell if it is working or not.
And I don’t have any faith in reddit anymore. Most people don’t even understand the question. And some reddits like r/PrivacyGuides remove the question, because their rules don’t allow Tor+VPN questions. Even though my question is actually the opposite. I want to use Tor and VPN, but NOT Tor+VPN in the same connection… Go figure. Many people and subreddits are just stupid

Did you ever figure this out? I’m having a similar issue trying to figure out how to exclude Tor traffic from my VPN…having a good test would make it easier to see if it’s working as intended!
