Fortigate as a VPN client?

Hi, all threads I see about this topic are fairly old, so I thought it wouldn’t be any harm creating a new one. I just got a Fortigate 60E set up at home, and I would’ve loved to use it as a VPN client so I can watch netflix from another region through my TV/Playstation. Is this (still) a no go? And if so, could anyone share some other options I can consider? I suppose I could easily share a VPN connection from my PC through wifi, but I want a solution that is a bit more user friendly.

Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Technically doable (you can make an IPsec tunnel to another box you control in a country you want, and route through it), but it’s not the simple setup you may be used to from the consumer-targeted VPN services.
If there’s a consumer VPN service that supports generic IKEv1/v2 IPsec, you could try hooking up to that from the FortiGate.

I’m guessing you mean an OpenVPN client, you can’t do it on the Fortigate natively. I set up a small PFSense VM for this purpose, then route traffic through it as needed

This is on my project list. Below is what I am thinking, but I have no idea if it will work.

RaspberryPi OpenVPN or Wireguard client. You can even set up the Raspi as an access point.

Configure the Raspi on its own interface or VLAN.

When you want to connect to the VPN, you connect to the Raspi ssid.

There are some tutorials on this configuration online.

I’ll see if I can find any that supports IKE IPsec, thank you!

Just curious, do you have an always-on server (vm) running, or do you fire one up each time you want to use it? What’s your setup like?

I thought of the exact same thing! In theory it should work. But I am going to look into ProtonVPN first as mentioned elsewhere in this thread. If I can setup with FG with VPN that’d be the easiest. Haven’t had time to look into it yet though.

ProtonVPN does, I want to try this out myself. We should keep each other up to date if you happen to try the same.

Yeah I just leave it running, it doesn’t really use many resources. I have a server with a bunch of VMs on it running 24/7 anyway

You could probably do it with something as small as a Raspberry Pi if you wanted.

When I used it I set up the routes manually, but you could probably do it better with policy routes or something similar

Is proton owned by th’ gubbermint?

I ended up giving this a try with protonVPN on a 60e, and it will not work. The fortigate does not support the authitentication needed to work this way. (I’d love to be proven wrong)

I’ll look into it first chance I get, thanks! Will definitely get back to you if I end up testing it out.

I’ve played with the idea of setting up a raspberry pi. Would be a good learning experience for me setting up a server with VMs though, as I’ve never done that before myself.

Thanks for the advice!

Well duh, what isn’t? /s

Unfortunately I ultimately found out the same. Such a shame, would have been perfect. Let me know if you stumble upon an alternative.

I question free privacy services. I didn’t see a paid option for Proton like their mail service.

Sorry to hear it didn’t work. I just finished moving and was going to try it out when I get everything settled. Guess I might be looking to get an Android TV with VPN capabilities (although I don’t know too much about Android TVs…).

Oh yeah? I thought they had a paid option. Haven’t looked too far into it though. Not sure about it if its free only.

How is that for follow through. Thanks!
