I want to access my work folder at home but I failed to make a vpn connection on my win10 computers.
- I made a vpn connection on Server computer with static IP adress.
2.I reserved that IP adress on the router and forwardes it to port 1723.
- On my personal pc, I added a vpn connection and filled in public ip adress, user and password.
I looked up every youtube video and article about this subject but I just cant get it to work. Has anyone done this before?
speak to your IT department
I’ve done something similar before. What VPN are you using?
Do you get any specific errors?
what vpn server software are you using? what client are you using? it sounds like you setup port forward but is it to the correct port? also did you make the firewall changes? we need more information to do any sort of troubleshooting.
My family owns a cnc machine shop and I do the IT work.
This is windows built in VPN.
One error says that vpn is slow or reached capacity. Other error is name of the remote access server did not resolve.
When you’re testing this, are you doing it from within the same network or externally? A lot of VPNs don’t work well in a ‘loopback’ environment on the same network. I always test ours on mobile hotspot.
Perhaps also check out OpenVPN or Zerotier
I connected to my mobile phone just like you said but no luck.
I will be looking into those options, thanks for your time.
No problem, happy to help you try and figure out the windows VPN bit if you wanna DM me, but tbh I find they’re just a bit more hassle than they’re worth when there’s some better options out there
I actually didn’t know VPN apps can share files the way I wanted.
A month ago a customer came in to our company and we had a meeting. In the meeting while he was screen sharing his pc, he connected to his company’s vpn to access his files and I was blown away. I wanted to use it just like that. I searched on the internet and came by this video https://youtu.be/YH2nmDOYoz0. Thats why I was doing windows connections.
Yes they should all work relatively similarly
I just watched that video. Yeah that definitely doesn’t look like the best way of doing it.
I think Zerotier would be your best bet tbh. I believe it also doesn’t require any firewall rules to be modified, just an agent on both machines and they’ll both speak over the internet
And it’s free
Sounds amazing! Thanks for the advice. I will get back to you tomorrow after trying it. You made my day
I downloaded Zerotier and made the VPN connection. Thank you very much for the advice!
I tried to donwload a file to test, but speed is too slow, 355KB/sec is the max it capped at. Even navigating files took way too long. I don’t think the issue is my internet connections, both can surf, watch video with no problem.
Oh - that’s odd… I don’t think I’ve seen that issue with ZT before. Perhaps they rate limit it, but I wasn’t aware of that.
Do you need a VPN? Could you use something like RustDesk to remote onto your machine instead and just interact with the machine itself?
Edit: there is also Tailscale that you could check out. I’ve heard good things but never used it myself.
I would like to share folders with other emloyees as well. When they are home or another company for work, easily accessible server connection would be very nice. I got it to work and now I will try to make it faster. I may try OpenVPN
Makes sense. Per the edit on my previous reply, there’s also Tailscale that you could check out.
I do like OpenVPN (it’s what I use), but I have our VPN server installed on our firewall (OPNsense). Your router may also have its own VPN server built in that you could configure to allow remote access to your home network.
Otherwise, OneDrive
This doc might help with the slowness: https://docs.zerotier.com/zerotier/troubleshooting
Update: I got the VPN to be as fast as the upload speed of my internet connection, success! I really liked tailscale, perfect fit for my needs!
But I also got somewhat curious. I have a TP-Link Archer VR300 and it has a feature called IPSEC VPN, is it the VPN Server built into the router? A built in VPN Could be better because now I am thinking of waking up the server if it goes down while I am away. I don’t know if tailscale could do it because when the PC is off, app is not running.
Other than that, you were a great help! Thank you very much.
I have daily files on a SSD on a Win10 computer running 24/7. This computer has a HDD that I backup files to everyday. Also google drive is installed, which automatically uploads files to the cloud. I could access files through cloud but each department has different access levels. Drive does not differentiate this as far as I know. So VPN could be the best way to achieve what I want.
I use Deco X20 and it does not support VPN.
I will try to make it work and give Tailscale a chance.
Edit: I setup Tailscale and speed/latency is very similar but better. I think I need to make chances to my router/modem. Deco is not the best device for this, I will try another one soon.
Ah fantastic! Glad you managed to get it all working!!
The IPSEC VPN probably would work for you yes, I’ve only ever used IPSEC for tunnels between two firewalls, but never an end user device, but I suspect that it would work fine. Feel free to DM me if you need any help
