Express vpn sells to Kape

They handed data because of an activist due to a court order. Tell me which company will ignore an legal order to do such things.

Well, I’ve already paid 2-years so I’m going to ride it out for now. I’ll have to look into your recommendations when renewal date gets a little closer.

It’s my fist ever VPN, and I’m not doing anything crazy enough to warrant the governments attention, so it’s fine for now, but I also know I don’t like that kind of precedent for a VPN, so I’ll try to be a little more prudent when searching for my next one.

I’m still looking into it. From what I see so far, it appears that they claim they do not log and they started logging before they actually got the court order to log. I think that’s what people have an issue with.

In a single KIDNAPPING case from 2017. Underline entire frigging sentence, not what you want to cherry pick to push your bullshit around. It’s all literally on picture you posted. Do you even understand what it says?

What would you prefer they do?

If they don’t comply with the order, they’re liable. They were legally compelled to log that individual’s IP and provide it to the authorities. Every other email provider would have done exactly the same thing

It’s one thing to say, “this sucks,” but if you’re honest you should say, “this sucks but this would’ve happened no matter what email provider was used”

that’s true,
but i’m going to take a bit of risk on this one,
I used their vpn for a while and I enjoyed that !

Does Not Matter.

Yea you’re right. The best one could do is send some traffic that terminated at the VPN server. Still I think it should be statistically possible to infer and correlate users and that’s just some minor noise.

I think it’s a risk with most any third party VPN isn’t it?

there are VPN Like perfect privacy which had raids from officials and never had logs given out.

I think OpenVPN allows you to host your own VPN, which would eliminate that worry if I understand correctly.

No because you would need to hand out data about yourself / its running on you so easy, also no shared ip , you need to maintain it and stuff.

Do we have a source for this occurring during the most recent (last couple weeks) incident?

The source for the kidnapping case is present in this thread but I’m not seeing a source for the most recent incident

In KIDNAPPING cases. Underline entire frigging sentence, not what you want to cherry pick to push your bullshit around.

OK i call now Proton VPN claim theres a kidnapping and tell them "trust me bro we have a court order give us anything about user X "

Sounds great to you?

also they edited their canary HEAVILY afterwards

Dude you didn’t read carefully.

Yes if they are ordered BY COURT it’s fine.

But they literarily went without a court order in hand police literarily called them up with " hey this might sound weird but log this dude we have a court warrant just trust me bro". And they were like " yup that sounds fine"

You know the steps would be.

Get notification - receive court order- actually HAVE THE COURT ORDER - comply.

Not get called - comply to" trust me bro "

Also they edited their warrant canary so it isn’t visible that they did it instead of staying transparent.

So they literarily try to play it out like it never happened because they know this was a bad move.

but i’m going to take a bit of risk on this one, I used their vpn for a while and I enjoyed that !

I mean thats quite the weird turn of you because the first reaction was “wtf really?”

but everyone to their own.

Oh, I didn’t realize there was more than one incident.

Your reading skills seem to be weak. So weak you’re basically illiterate. Read the damn thing again. They assited themselves because they did own investigation for that particular case as they were aware kidnappers were using Protonmail. This doesn’t mean they are just running around handing out user data.

You’re referring to, what was it, the 2017 kidnapping case right? You’re not referring to the IP logging incident from the last few weeks? Just wanted to clarify

I actually didn’t hear the news about protonmail, and the fear you pushed by “hanging out data” … thus the reaction!
Considering I’m not an activist nor am I doing a crime,
Imma just torrent, and i don’t think my gov will ask them about how i torrented, If i was serious about that much privacy, I would have been scrolling through r/privacy

and the fear you pushed by “hanging out data” .

I mean iam not pushing any fear they literarily handed out data without a court order in hand on the basis of “trust me bro” from police.

Source for the latter, more recent incident?

And you’re claiming that the IP was logged prior to receiving a court order during both incidents, correct?

and here I was thinking that swiss privacy was the best!

its not as bad as germany but actually not anymore the best since a few years.

Surfshark does a yearly Privacy index , and internet quality index with some tons of information not regarding their VPN at all so its pretty neutral and informative.
