Different ways to get Mullvad?

So Mozilla VPN and Malwarebytes Privacy (VPN) both use Mullvad servers. In fact, if you fire up Malwarebytes Privacy and do the “connection check” at Mullvad.net, the result indicates you are “using Mullvad VPN”

That said, I’m unclear as to the differences in functionality between the three, and there may be solid reasons to use one vs the other. I’d be curious to learn more about the differences. I know the executables are not the same size.

But… there is a price difference as you can get Malwarebytes VPN, right now for about $1/mo if you buy 5 devices ($59.99 billed annually covers 5 devices = $1/mo). The 3 device cost is currently $39.99 annually or $1.11/mo per device.

IMO if you’re using Mullvad because you think it affords you great privacy using another provider in front of it doesn’t seem like a very smart idea. If you want a cheaper VPN I would just go elsewhere tbh

For me, there’s no value in putting another entity in the mix. I think these reseller affiliations will help attract customers who normally might not buy a VPN plan, but for those who are already familiar with VPNs I think it’s better to go to the source.

I’m been using Mozilla for 3 months, mainly becaue the price was slightly less than Mullvad. But the software used is different and lags behind Mullvad on the Mac.

For example, Mullvad launched custom DNS server choice in April but that option is missing with Mozilla. I prefer to use Cloudflare DNS but Mozilla VPN forces use of 10.64.01

I contacted Mozilla Tech Support about that and was told “This feature isn’t currently available on the Mozilla VPN, but we’re more than happy to share your request with our team. We have a request tracker that our team uses to count and track individual requests, and it also lets us easily send you a follow-up if the feature is offered in a future update.”

Also, I got an email saying that Mozilla increased its prices from $5/month on the month-to-month plan but I’m grandfathered in to that rate (it’s now only that price if you prepay for a year).

So although I’m happy with Mozilla VPN if I were starting out I’d probably just choose Mullvad.

Note: last Black Friday Malwarebytes (another reseller) tossed in a free year of Malwarebytes protection with a 1-year prepayment of its Mullvad VPN service.

In the end , I think the 3 device tier is what makes Malwarebytes Privacy pricing unique, as the Mullvad pricing starts at 5 devices.

I’m all about cost saving too, but the privacy balance of throwing another service in front of mullvad isn’t worth it, sort of defeats the purpose. I’m just happy to be paying a cappuccino’s worth a month to get a degree of privacy/security from the best vpn out there (imho!)

Privacy and security noob here so bear with me, is there a problem using Malwarebytes VPN here as many claims? If one uses the MW anti-virus app, what problems could arise when using their VPN compare to using it directly from Mullvad?

I honestly feel like Mullvad is super cheap. $5 for 5 devices is awesome.

NordVPN is $12 for 6 devices ($2/device)

ProtonVPN is $5 for 2 devices ($2.5/device)

ExpressVPN is $13 for 5 devices ($2.6/device)

you can still use dns over http from mullvad in chrome etc. i was about to buy and build a pihole server but i turned out dns over http blocks much sh_t. its free!

And paying with BTC.

The anti-virus MW app is sort of irrelevant. It’s about two VPN options. The Mullvad VPN client is different than the MW privacy VPN even though the utilize the same VPN server network.

I would recommend spending a couple bucks to try both and compare on your devices. I find Mullvad to have the better client app and that it seems to be updated more often. But you may find that MW Privacy works fine and is cheaper. ProtonVPN also has a free tier (fewer servers, slower) which may be a consideration too.

Proton’s premium plan is $10 for 10 connections now if paying month to month. No port forwarding though

well if you only need 2 devices its quite stiff. unless i get criminal i won’t need more than 3. i don’t really need port forwarding even if it’s magic and sort of mandatory whilst getting a vpn. at the moment i share a popular vpn with my friend who only uses 1 account.

I said privacy not piracy, though either should be fine!

Thanks but in the interim since I posted that 5 months ago Mozilla’s app was updated to add Advanced DNS Settings, so I was finally able to choose Cloudflare.

Appreciate this feedback.
