China eSIM - is VPN still required? - Samsung Android

I’ve used Airalo in the past when travelling to Europe, but I will be travelling to Asia and next month and will be spending some time in Mainland China.

I’ve always had difficulty in the past with accessing my meta/google apps when in China - VPNs have failed me. but I have read a few threads where it seems this has been working better over the years.

I plan to be using Airalo again with my travels to mainland - so I am wondering if I would also need to use a VPN on top of Airalo when in Mainland China. Note that I have an Samsung android so majority of my apps are run off of Google.

Has anyone had experience with this?

I was in China with an Airalo e-SIM last month and could access everything like back home, no VPN needed.
That will not be the case on (hotel) Wi-Fi so for that you will still want a VPN or stay on your mobile connection and thus use a bit more data.
