Hi All,
I have just recently got a brume2, which I have put directly behind my ISP modem and in front of my eero at home. As it is, everything works ok, but…
One use-case I have is to enable the VPN only for a handful of devices (mainly one). Problem is that the way the network is setup the Brume2 can only see (hence filter) the mac address of the eero box, which is basically the same as going “global” since all devices are connected to the eero mesh. On top of that, for whatever reason (but I suspect it is related), the mobile app cannot find the Brume2 during setup.
One possible solution I see is to set the eero in bridge mode, which will also mean I will lose all the eero network functionality (which is?), but have not tried yet.
Is there anything else I can try? I would not mind going “global” for the VPN but at least the mobile app should work so I can easily switch the VPN on and off.
I’ve had problems with the mobile app not finding my glinet router previously, and ended up having to do a factory reset to get it working.
I also have an eero in the mix. What is the network functionality that you gain from the eero? I ended up placing my eero in front of the glinet and any device that I don’t want on the vpn connects directly to the eero. The eero also feeds my glinet, which is running a vpn in global mode so that any device connected directly to it is connected to the vpn. I guess in this configuration, the eero’s network functionality is still in play, plus you have the extra functionality of the brume2 for the devices connected to it. Depending on the number of devices you want connected to the brume or eero, you may need to add a switch or two.
That would have been an idea yes, and if I only really need one device connected to the brume is great because I would need the single port.
I might give this a try later, but I also wanted my brume to be at the root of the network to then use the AdGuard feature.
For the time being I have set the eero in bridge mode, apparently you are not losing a lot, and if you are not a eero Plus subscriber (which I am not) you are losing even less. Everything works like a charm, I can see my devices in the brume admin panel, I can selectively enable VPN from the mobile app for the devices I have in the filter, and AdGuard works across the whole estate.
If in the future I really want something more, I might go and get a Firewalla device, but for the time being a Brume 2, with the latest prime day offer, is a perfect solution!
