Beware! Avast products are FULL of trackers!

I have been using Avast Ultimate for two years, but after setting up NextDNS and seeing this for almost a month, I reset my PC and switched to Bitdefender Total Security.

Any Avast products (AV, Cleaner, VPN) keep sending these trackers along with some others like Driver, Analytics, etc. EVERY 2 MINUTES or so.

Hello,

As /u/TheConsciousBone, /u/Vegetable-Machine-73, and possibly others have noted in their replies, the website in question is some kind of network connectivity check.

Whether or not it is working correctly or there is some kind of bug with it being repeatedly contacted is something you will need to ask Gen Digital, the company that owns the Avast, AVG, Avira, Bulldog, LifeLock and Norton brands.

With that said, we will now draw this thread to a close.

Regards,

Aryeh Goretsky

It is not a recommended antivirus if I remember correctly, along with McAfee

man i remember when avast was a beloved free anti virus during the late windows 7 early windows 10 days its a shame that good antiviruses are always bought by shady companies and become the very thing they promise to block

More Info:

Out of a total 43,700 blocked queries, almost 20,000 are alone from ncc.avast.com

the ncc query is a network check as far as i know (see http://ncc.avast.com/ncc.txt) but it could also be something else, the other query looks like analytics of some sort from looking at the url

I have negative amount of knowledge in this domain what’s the best one to replace avast ?

ncc.avast.com is just a network connectivity check. It’s not actually sending anything. The analytics domain is only for stuff Avast deems essential, like detection statistics and error reports.

Even when avast contacts the analytics domain, that doesn’t actually mean it’s even sending anything. You’d get much more detail from something like Glasswire, but someone’s blocklist isn’t necessarily evidence of wrongdoing.

Hasn’t this been known for years?

AVG and Avast arnt free because the owners are nice guys. They gotta make money somehow.

All you need is windows defender and common sense…

windows defender all you ever need fr

just use defender god damn

When I installed Avast and kept it for one week, for testing purpose, there was no such dns query made by the program. Why? Cause I turned of the data sharing option.

Oh what? You can turn it off? Unbelievable …

And to clarify something, when you block a query, the program might try to send it again and again until it gets a response back. So the 19.9k queries made by “ncc.avast.com” in reality is not that high., could be something lower than 300 per month.

Bitdefender, and the newer version of window defender (surprisingly has come along way lol!) are definitely better options than Avast, Mcafee, and all these other junk softwares.

Is antivirus software even worth paying for in 2023?

They company are known for this types of situations, i hate them and i was allways aware of them, and be aware of companies that make a lot of things like avast or mcafee. Best free suggestions for antivirus is Bitdefender, Kaspersky.
For password manager Bitwarden or keypassx and for free VPN’s
Mulvad and Proton VPN beacouse they have no logs, oh and never use Hola VPN its for things like Netflix and they are free but they are selling ur data

You probably don’t even need Bit-defender either. Just use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes for periodic PUP scanning.

Avast lost my trust years ago when they started false flagging pirated games (Was broke dont judge me) and nagging me every day or two about buying this or that.

Ive stuck with either windows defender or kaspersky but malwarebytes and bit-defender should be fine too!

I’m not gonna lie, on modern Windows you really don’t need more than Windows Defender.

Just use Windows Defender.
