Windows 10 VPN - What're you guys using?

Here’s my current niggle, for whatever reason Microsoft decided the Windows 7/8 method of connecting to a VPN - which was streamlined and easy to use - sucked, and has replaced it with a frustratingly buggy interface that requires more clicks and frequently doesn’t let me disconnect.

In the office I support numerous customers and frequently jump in and out of VPNs - it’s not a serious problem but adds unnecessary delay I could do without.

For the record, RASDIAL isn’t really suitable. Some guys previously mentioned ShrewSoft in previous threads which I’ll test shortly. Anybody else found this issue or can suggest adequate software to use instead?

EDIT: thanks for the suggestions guys. Going to do some testing myself and hopefully will report back my findings. Might help others in the near future with the same issue.

I often use OpenVPN enabled permanently as a service… So there’s nothing for the usert to interact with at all.

It works well, for my needs.

I’ve installed an OpenVPN server and deploy OpenVpn to my clients. It’s fast, easy to configure and just plain works! Microsoft never could figure out how to create a functional VPN…

Why is rasdial not suitable? Just create a desktop icon through group policies, done?

Plus I totally agree that msft totally screwed the VPN thing up in Windows 10. The Windows VPN client totally sucks, the only reason why we use it is because we don’t need to deploy any software in order for it to work, the group policies to configure the VPN are just there, and it’s usually three clicks and you’re connected.

The worst thing about the Windows 10 VPN UI, if you have a lot of connections, and you scroll down to get the right one, once the Windows 10 UI thing pops up, you have to scroll down again…

I’m still amazed how a multi-billion dollar company, the best it can do, is Windows 10…

OpenVPN, with Viscosity as a client if you don’t like the standard one.

I find the Win7 client sucks as well. I guess its okay if the user/pass is integrated into AD, but ours isn’t and then when users connect the client passes the non-AD credentials to AD and locks out accounts. It also is full of antiquated language about “dialing” internet and servers. Really MS, for a fucking OS released in 2009?

We just use the Sonicwall client now. Its stupid easy and rock solid.

either pulse secure or anyconnect.

there’s a reason we didn’t jump in the deep end of the pool for 8/8.1 native VPN connections and MS is proving again that if something can possibly be too good to be true, they’re the ones to fuck it up for everyone.

Cisco AnyConnect here

We just use IPSec in the Windows 10 Native client. I actually prefer it over the Win7 version.

Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client 4.0.00051

Using ShrewSoft at the moment. Let me know how your test goes/what you think.

Direct Access. 0 clicks required.

I wish I could go OpenVPN, but the head shed decided to go with ASA equipment and mandated AnyConnect. Its stable, I’ll give it that. But there are days that I want to throw that ASA out the window.

We use Cisco AnyConnect, it works pretty well.

Cisco AnyConnect is working for us.

I have not looked at any of the technical previews for 2016 yet, but is SSTP still an option for legacy systems?
