Which of the following is a Protocol commonly used with Today’s VPNs?

The book says it is IPsec, but couldn’t it also be L2TP?

Wouldn’t both answers be correct?

IPSec is correct. You’re misunderstanding L2TP

L2TP is a point-to-point protocol that allows your device to connect to another device as if they were part of the same LAN. L2TP itself does not have any built-in security features. Rather, L2TP can (and absolutely should) be paired with IPSec to enable those all-important security features

To put more simply:

  • L2TP = enables remote communication
  • IPSec = encrypts that communication

Hope that clears things up

I understand IPsec is bundled together with L2TP, and L2TP works in almost every connection out there. The fact that both are protocols, makes it difficult to find the correct answer.

Makes sense. Thank you!!!
