Hi. Does anyone use an app to connect to their home through vpn? Would like to be able to use Kodi when out of town to watch my own shows.
Tried a few clients already but haven’t found one where you can enter your own connection?
All of them so far only let you connect to different countries.
Any ideas?
A different option is Plex which allows remote casting and is generally considered safe to use without a VPN.
Most VPN apps these days are focused on anonymizing traffic or changing your geo location so that is what will flood the search results in an app store. Wireguard or OpenVPN would be your best options but will need a device at the house to receive the connection. It could be a router or a computer that is always running at the house. A lot of residential grade routers have OpenVPN built in so that maybe your easiest option. If not, you could buy something as cheap as a Raspberry Pi ($50) to host a Wireguard server. Or maybe you have an old computer laying around that you could run Linux on. Wireguard is built into the Linux kernel now.
I have wireguard vpn installed on my chromecast with google tv that I use at work and connect to pivpn running on my home network. It was a bit of a pain to install the config file because the interface for adding the config doesn’t display properly on the chromecast but you can manually upload the config file with a file explorer app.
Thanks, used Openvpn, that worked
For my old style Chromecast device (just Chromecast, nothing else) what I had to do was to set up a virtual access point for the Chromecast device (using OpenWrt).
Then on the OpenWrt router I can change the vpn to according with what I would like to watch.
On the new generation Chromecast, from what I understand, you can install vpn apps which will set up the VPN (I also have a two-year old Android tv box).
