VPN through Hotspot

Hello everyone :waving_hand:

I have a question and I wasn’t sure where to ask it but here seems like a decent place to do so. I apologise for my English in advance, it’s not my first language.

Is it possible, to share a Personal Hotspot from a smartphone, and make it in such way that when I connect to it through other device it shows IP of that place?

For example, if I am in Chicago and connect to a VPN that indicates New York through my phone, then share hotspot and connect to it from my laptop, will the IP of my laptop traffic indicate I’m in Chicago or in New York?

I would like to read your thoughts and input on this matter and I will really appreciate it!

Most phones don’t share the VPN packets through hotspot. But your other option is to share the hotspot and connect the vpn on the other device. Same result.

Hello

I was planning to write something about hotspot but I think that is not what you need.

It would depend of your device but on linux you can use namespaced-openvpn (GitHub - slingamn/namespaced-openvpn: Wrapper for OpenVPN on Linux solving various privacy issues). It would let you connect to vpn1 and running vpn2 over vpn1 for example.

I hope I understood your issue if not don’t hesitate to tell me.

The only thing that does it - GL-E750 / Mudi - GL.iNet
I’ve researched this topic and this is the only thing that fits the bill as hotspot in smartphone (regardless iOS or Android) does not route hotspot traffic through established VPN tunnel.

Idk if this can help you but…
Donwload Easytheter in your phone and PC and then active the VPN on the mobile, connect your phone trough USB to your PC and the trafic of your PC will be encripted by the Phone.

The smartphone can’t share VPN hotspot traffic in most case, but you can try use computer VPN hotspot, and share to other device(smartphone, xbox, playstation), it will be work.

For example, you need to set proxy server in smartphone, normally we will set local port as 127.0.0.1:1080.

Yeah, I assumed this second option. However the thing is that I connect to a company VPN anyway(it’s for my work laptop) but I need to connect to a network and I need this network to appear in city X while I’m in city Y.

So for that reason I was thinking if it’s possible to change the IP of the network prior to connecting to it

Ah yeah well there are ways of doing it but I think what you are hoping may not happen so easily.

It’s difficult I guess. You can get dedicated devices for that to make things easier.
