Minor point but I live next to their building so it’s burned into my brain, the TV network is Abema.
The difference is even more clear in Japanese: アメバ vs アベマ
Even worse, Ameba does exist and is a geinojin blog site: ameba.jp vs abema.tv
I’ve only had luck before buying a VPS server from Japan (can be hit or miss), and self-hosting a vpn myself. Usually around 5 bucks a month.
However, a lot of these sites usually ask for a valid Japanese number and address. I’ve tried some american VPS before that had Japanese locations, but those seemed to be blocked by Ameba, and it’s always just a matter of time before X VPN or VPS gets blacklisted or whatever.
I used protonvpn with abema and it worked perfectly. The free version has japanese servers but I never managed to get one as they are usually busy and the app doesnt let you select server location for free users. The pro version worked perfectly tho.
There is one but it is not VPN as VPNs are bustable for Abema.

+1 to Proton, except I also used the paid version.
It also works for things like Netflix in order to get Japanese subtitles on anime.
I spent at least 3 years thinking it was Ameba and they literally had to build a tall building near me, move into it and put this massive TV on it for me to finally go: “Has it always been Abema???”
