VPN needed for Real-Debrid

Hi everyone,

currently I use a VPN for my Kodi usage, since I switched to RD and having connection speed issues (due to VPN) I was wondering if we really need a VPN.

Is a VPN needed for using Hosters only and what about the Torrents within RD?

I did some google searching and found mised results. Some say you don’t need an VPN, some say better use one.

:victory_hand:

You don’t need a VPN if watching RD sources.

You can use a VPN if you’re paranoid or wanting an extra level of protection but it pretty much needs to be one of the approved cooperative VPNs listed on the RD website otherwise you can have issues.

And yes, as you’ve experienced using a VPN can slow your streaming experience down even further if your VPN speeds are noticeably slower than your ISP speeds. I’m lucky in this respect that my VPN speed is almost identical to my ISP speed.

You don’t need to use a VPN on Real-Debrid, especially if you have gone to My Account on the website and made sure that the download port is set to secured. You honestly think that they have any interest in catching end users? They want the hosters, they have realized a long time ago that going after end users costs more money than they make from lawsuits.

Even further, RD is not friendly with most VPNs. If they aren’t on this list of cooperating VPNs, you may find that the IP address is blocked (it will tell you at the top of the page if the IP is allowed or not) and if that’s the case, links will populate but they won’t work and you’ll have to email support to get the IP address whitelisted.

Those who say you better use a VPN with RD are either ignorant or trying to sell you a VPN service. The exception being, if your ISP practices censorship and it blocks you from connecting to RD.

You don’t need a vpn when using real debrid but keep in mind they do keep logs for up to one year for legal reasons. personally I use pia vpn with no problems as the don’t log usage.

I think very few users have had a problem using Real-Debrid without a VPN. As others have said, ISPs tend to target people who are hosting torrents (e.g. servers). Your ISP is unlikely to care if you use Kodi as a client to stream movies from video sources.

I use a VPN at all times (on every device: FireStick, phones, laptop, TVs)even when connected to Real-Debrid. Real-Debrid, and other debrid services, are used primarily for streaming pirated videos. I have no doubt my ISP knows the purpose of debrid services so I use a VPN so they cannot even see that small bit of info about my internet usage. They have no need to know any web sites I use including my bank and shopping sites.

From what ive seen I had to create an account without a VPN so it has logged my ISP so wouldn’t that mean that if someone viewed use of real debris it would be like I never used a VPN the entire time?

It depends on where you live, what the laws are and who your ISP is. I am in the UK, If I use Kodi add-ons with RD without VPN, I get some links, but not a lot. If I enable a VPN, more links become available. I’ve not had any issues with slow downs, I normally connect to Isle of Man as I get close speed to what I normally get without using a VPN.

I have a question…Isn’t using Real Debrid more risky? … even if you’re just streaming they log your activity as downloading(keeping) the content, and even if you stop it after a couple of seconds that log makes it seem that you downloaded the whole thing, so if they get raided… the powers that be will get all your “download” history no?..

Also, if you do use a VPN you must always do your RD authentication with the VPN OFF. Once authorised, you then enable the VPN if using one.

Just get proton vpn free if you want to test anything out. But you dont really need vpn with real debrid as they cache the stuff to their servers

Correct me if I am wrong but it was my understanding that the connection to RD is obfuscated rather than encrypted. The result being it is difficult but not impossible to detect the traffic.

Also OP I’ve been using Nordvpn with RD and noticed no lag whatsoever that wasn’t resolved by changing sources. This led me to believe the issue was with the origin rather than RD.

spot on exactly explained

This is NOT true. I recently subscribed to RD and while using Stremio, I watched some content using an RD source and my ISP sent me notices warning me about downloading copy-righted content. I’m not sure how they could detect this and they even provided the Titles of the content I watched. USE A VPN!!

… and yes, I double-checked my RD account and the download port IS set to “Secured”.

Even when using Torrents Service in RD with sources like Piratebay?

When money isn’t involved, neither is regulation… huh

this is the correct and probably the simplest answer for a person who asks if they need a vpn for RD  i have no idea why others are trying so hard.

from what I’ve seen they still are able to log what you’re viewing/downloading… which is to be expected, they know who you are because you have to login to an account with them so they still have the logs related to that account… so I don’t thing a VPN adds any protection when connecting to Real Debrid… right?

That is totally not true. I amready use 5 years RD with a VPN and VPN is continuesly connected. RD allows to use a VPN but not all VPN providers are whitelisted on their servers
