Slow speeds using sabnzbdvpn and PIA? Like max 40mbit

So I managed to follow some quick guides to get binhex-sabnzbdvpn running on my Unraid server. I’m using Sonarr and Radarr with it, and everything is working fine, but it’s slow, like 40mbit max slow.

Is this just the nature of using a VPN? Is there a way for me to tell it to connect to a faster server? I’m new to VPN and even newer to newsgroups.

Suggestions?

VPN is usually slow, but also depends on your CPU performance. PIA is a bit over taxed in general. On a pfSense box with an i3-9100 I got maybe 180 MBp/s with AES-NI enabled using PIA, with Mullvad I get closer to 400+

Eh… I have gigabit and my speeds bounce around 20-60 Mb/s with Sab downloading to SSD.

With PIA over wireguard on Qbittorrrent, I’ve gotten 70 Mb/s with a very well seeded .iso

Much faster than the older udp ovpn config I was using up until a few weeks ago.

Usenet doesnt necessarily require a vpn. Everything is encrypted over SSL. People get a false sense of security using a VPN. What happens if your indexer or news server gets raided? They most likley store everything and your payment information is there same with your email and (hopefully not) what you have downloaded. Anytime you hear about piracy arrests it’s always the person/group distributing not who’s been downloading (since that’s not inherently illegal in the US).

But if you’re keen on using a vpn with usenet then use wiregaurd protocol. Faster round trip times and way less overhead. Speeds tend to max out my line.

VPNs are generally much slower than your normal connection due to the overhead. Under perfect conditions openvpn maxes out around 75-100mbit.

Why not change to WireGuard through pia instead of regular vpn. It will be far faster.

Running an i3-10100 and wireguard already. I knew a VPN would be slower, but didn’t know if there was a way to change the server to one with more available bandwidth or lower latency, etc.

It’s not a huge deal, just wanted to make sure I wasn’t doing something wrong.

Yeah, I know it’s not necessarily required, but I figure I’m paying for it, might as well add an extra layer of security for my Linux ISO’s. I’m already using wireguard, the slower speeds aren’t a deal breaker, just making sure I wasn’t doing something wrong.

Try out mullvad. Just passed through my sab to my VPN container to test. And my test download to eweka I got 70 MB/s which is line speed.

Noob question, but that’s another provider right? I just signed up for like 3 years of PIA. lol

Yeah considered one of the best. Ever since PIA got sold I stopped using them.
