Remote worker in Egypt - how to?

Hi,

I am tourist + an experienced IT guy. I have been once to Egypt so far (in late 2023) and I was surprised that I could not do anything “work related” from Egypt.
I mean neither NordVPN, corporate OpenVPN and corporate WireguardVPN worked for me. Every VPN connection I tried was perfectly blocked in both: Hotel Wifi and Egyptian SIM (T-mobile) :frowning:

What do you guys suggest to use in your country for remote workers?

Otherwise Egypt can not be a touristic place for me (for longer stays) as I often need to do something company related and connect via VPN to our systems. I would like to spend 2 weeks in Egypt, but currently 1 week even seems to be too long :expressionless:

This is such a pain in the …, because your country made positive (touristic) impression on me.

Get a VPN service that supports anti-censorship function (advertisement of working in China), then run it, and then run your work VPN on top of it. That’s what everyone does. You may need to adjust the routing table but it will work.

ExpressVPN was working fine for me a month ago but it lags every once in a while but over all good

I was using Mullvad a couple of years ago and loved it. Not sure if it still works, but if it does then it’s so worth it!

I have been working remotely for years and I have the same issue.

My setup right now is:

- Windscribe (Purchase a static IP in chicago) on my PC.

- Corporate VPN (Sophos which is blocked in Egypt).

I connect my work laptop to my PC and share windscribe from PC to Laptop, then any client/corporate VPN works fine. The downside is that you need a convenient setup of two machines, but the benefit is that it works with any client even if they don’t have VPNs and want to whitelist your IP instead since it’s static.

MullVad VPN has been my personal favorite for more than a year. Worked everywhere I tried it, and they have specific instructions for each country too!
Additionally, there’s a free VPN by cloudflare that also worked for me. I think its name is warp.

Try Outline VPN. Try setting up your own Outline server on a Linux box.

I use Google Fi as my cellular provider and it has the ability to be used as a hotspot with unlimited data internationally for 90 days(and then you’d have to go back to the states for 30 days at least for your international roaming to work again). I’ve worked from Egypt for 110 days and I’m a cyber engineer and had no issues accessing work related sites, GitHub,AWS,Terraform,ec2 instances, etc. I use the Opera browser and it has a VPN plugin that worked well when I was in Lebanon. I didn’t know Terraform wasn’t accessible from Lebanon so you can try using Opera as your browser or test our google Fi as a cellular provider if you’re from the states

OpenVPN worked fine with my home internet, but was hell using my mobile data.

Use Windscribe VPN. It has a protocol called Stealth. This one works like a charm for me.

“Your country made a touristic impression on me”
Just fuckin how

Thanks for tip.

NordVPN describes themselves as working in China (How to use a VPN For China? Is it legal? | NordVPN), but „if the problem persists, jump between servers. There’s a chance that a server you’ve been using was blocked, so you can try to find another one working in China.”.
I tried about 20-30 NordVPN servers in Egypt with different connection types and none worked for me.
I will try IKEv2 next time as corporateVPN supports such option.

Can you share any VPN name that you know that works in Egypt? Tailscale did not work either for me there (but it is WireGuard so I know their DPI is able to filter)

Mullvad is based on Wireguard? and I think it may be blocked. @destinydisappointer article may explain how they do filtering (Wireguard detection).

Touristically there are multiple things worth seeing:
Pyramids of Giza, Temples and Tombs of Luxor, Nile Cruise, Aswan, Abu Simbel, Cairo, Egyptian Museum
Sakkara, White Desert, Alexandria.
I started from snorkeling and visiting wild reefs. I enjoyed time spent in the red sea. Next time would like to see some other places.

Try proton with stealth or express with lightway, wireguard may work with this tool: https://www.ntkernel.com/how-to-bypass-egypts-wireguard-ban/

That sucks. Not in Egypt to try right now, but Proton was working well last time I was!
