[Question] ISP Have contacted me for using 3rd party apps?

I’ve been using Popcorn Time via the Ignition 3rd party App Store, have been for months, I downloaded a series and have received a notification about the download from my ISP, a bit of a warning email about “illegal activity” any ideas how to prevent this? VPN etc?

The email reads as follows;

Sky, along with other internet service providers is supporting the ‘Get it Right from a Genuine Site’ initiative. This initiative aims to support Britain’s creative industry by helping to reduce copyrighted material being shared illegally and to promote accessing genuine sources for legal content.

We’ve been informed by owners of copyrighted material that the content below has been shared and uploaded without their permission and we need your help to prevent this happening again.

Here’s a summary of what’s been passed on to us:

On 15/05/19 at 20:05 100, THE - S01 - E01 Pilot was shared using your Sky Broadband connection.

Any advice?

Since you are in the UK you can just ignore it and carry on as normal. You may get other emails at some point, but nothing will happen.

Nothing to do with the app, just that you torrented the video.

Might want to get a VPN.

popcorntime downloads the movie you are NOT streaming. Personally I would just stick to websites for streaming films. Fmovies is fantastic just have a good adblocker.

long story short…popcorn time uses torrent technology…you’re device connected with the “owner” or copyright holder of said file…so they tagged and reported him.

but yea, i’ve been using a VPN (when i rarely torrent anymore…since it’s so slow) for the rare stuff…and just use web streams for the new releases…cause that really is what the copyright sharks are watching now

Definitely use a VPN when using popcorn time. I know it’s been said already, but definitely recommend it!

I think popcorn time uses torrents that’s why you got letter. Try using app that doesn’t use torrents. Or use vpn PIA vpn is cheap and doesn’t keep logs.

If you are streaming without a VPN, that would be it. That’s why I prefer to download it :stuck_out_tongue:

Use cotomovies. New episode of TV shows are always up in the app after like 20 mins after the episode airs.

Ignore them, I’ve had 30+ emails from BT for shit like that, it’s an email sent on behalf of a not for profit, they won’t do shit

Popcorn time uses torrent to download the movie. Torrents easily trigger ISPs detection.

You should try to use a vpn so they don’t detect the torrenting of whatever content you are watching

Thats sky for ya, ignore it imo, i had 1 for a copy of moana lmao nothing ever came of it.

The issue isn’t really ignition itself, it’s more that popcorn time is a torrent app and that can trigger a letter.

VPN recommended

Are there no legal consequences for pirating content in UK? Just curious.

Hence the need for a VPN now :+1:t3:

I’m going to dude, thank you though!

I used it more to download films for a flight I had to catch, that’s how they got me I think!

(if your on mobile) get the cracked version of expressvpn which almost matches your actual internet speed, you can get it on acmarket. and if you do use it, its basically a 7 day trial that you just have to input an email for, and i just use 10minutemail for that. And when the 7 day trial is over just clear the app data and rinse and repeat

So essentially use a VPN for downloads then usual ISP for everyday use?
