New user here. Unable to use Proton VPN along with Portmaster referred to community wiki which did not solve the problem. Found out that there are some other programs to be whitelisted in portmaster - openvpn.exe, protonvpnservices.exe and wireguard.exe. In the end OpenVPN(TCP) works but it fails with wireguard but queries routed through cloudflare instead of ISP of VPN. Tried the same method for windscribe it doesn’t work. There is no internet access if other DNS providers are used and cloudflare fallback is not setup.
This sounds like operator error.
If you were using the ProtonVPN Application as referenced in the Wiki, you wouldn’t have additional executables to allow list.
Secondly, I just tested this on a VM and it works just fine as outlined.
- Download Portmaster
- All default settings (literally nothing changed)
- Download ProtonVPN
- Install ProtonVPN
- Change Protocol to Wireguard
- Change DNS to loopback
Suggest you follow the steps in the Wiki as described, or follow my 5 steps above. Please note that Wireguard is hit or miss (again as outlined in the Wiki) and you may need to try a few different servers.
