Problems with ProtonVPN client on MacOS

Two days ago after I installed a new proton vpn update: Proton VPN loses connection at some point and then can’t connect again (no internet). If I quit the app I still have internet connection, but if I launch the app again and try to connect is says I have no internet. The only way i can get proton vpn to connect again is to restart the computer.

Is there a place I could download previous versions of proton vpn to revert and check if it’s the new updates that causes this issue?

Similar problems. There was a period earlier this year when they released something like 3 updates in one week, and mine hasn’t worked right since. My subscription runs out this month and I’m not renewing. I believe I will move to Mulvad (Mullvad VPN - Free the internet) a Swedish high-privacy VPN.

I have the same problem. But for me it only occurs sometimes, and usually after my Mac wakes up from sleep. And as you said, the only fix is to restart the Mac.

I’m running the current latest version of macOS Ventura (13.3.1)

u/ProtonVPN

The MacOS app has been problematic since the latest update.

It frequently disconnects after going to sleep

It also does not “start on boot”, despite having it turned on in settings.

Please advise

What OS and app version are you using?

Maybe you can just contact support to debug with them?

Did you try reinstalling?

I’m on 10.13.6 with older app. Mine drops connection after about 30mins and won’t reconnect unless I restart. I quit using the app and went with tunnelbrick no problems since. I would recommend just using the wire guard app or tunnel brick app.

Heard good things about them. What I could gather from their github is they are also lacking split-tunneling and have some performance issues on M1 macs.

Weird. I usually had that until I realized that manually reconnecting to a server speeds up the process. But eventually the connection just come back. In my experience, of course.

Did you contact support reporting that? Maybe there’s something about this particular OS version that is messing with the app.

Can you try turning off Kill Switch, if on, to see if this helps resolve the problem?

Proton VPN version 3.1.3 (2305040725)
MacOS 13.3.1 (a) (22E772610a)

Updated both the OS and Proton VPN the same day, so it could be the OS update too.

If I want to do a clean reinstall, is it enough to delete the protonvpn.app or do i have to purge some other files/settings somewhere?

ok, thanks for the suggestions. might try them! shame that the official app is so unstable.

ummm…“them” meaning Proton or Mulled? I have a M1 Max MacBook, so we will find out about Mulvad’s potential problems this weekend.

I did not contact support, but only because it doesn’t occur often.

disabling kill switch doesn’t fix the disconnect on sleep unfortunately. i have tried. but surely there have to be SOME workaround for this? rebooting the machine several times every day because of this makes me lose my mind. i am now using amphetamine to force the mac to not go into sleep. not a sustainable option but what else can you do.

I’d start with a simple deletion of the app to see if that helps. Your mac OS version is very new, maybe there’s something about that.

Mullvad. Let me know how it goes. I’m really annoyed with proton vpn as of now.

Reinstalling didn’t help. I’m tired of having to reboot the mac several times each day now. Hope support can figure this out for me.

24 hours into Mulvad. Easy to install, no billing or contact account to set up. Pretty much like a burner pre-pay phone. Working peacefully on iPad and M1 MacBook. Hasn’t upset Google or macOS the way Proton does for me.

I don’t have good head-to-head speed data but ping time and bit rates seem similar to Proton. If I choose a server manually to get one close to me, ping time more or less doubled compared to without VPN from 16 to 28 ms; download was cut from 60 mbps to 40; and upload was unchanged. I can’t tell any difference in things I do for real world tasks, but I don’t get great service out here in the country.

Similar speed, less hassles, half the price - Mulvad seems like a winner to me.

nice. still satisfied after one week?

Yes, very. I used to spend more time than I wanted getting Proton connected to a working server, and dealing with fallout when it switched servers, or just disconnected - I just don’t have to mess with Mulvad other than picking a new server when I want to for some reason.

Using it right now with internet service in a hotel, which has always been one of my worry points. I’ve deleted the Proton apps from MacBook, iPad & iPhone.
