We’ve always used GlobalProtect for Windows to connect our laptops to the office while working remotely. I’ve never considered using any other options, but was wondering if there are other options, and if any PA customers actually prefer other VPN options besides the GlobalProtect client for Windows. I know Windows 10 has a VPN configuration page in the Settings app. Is that an option? Is it any better (or at least as good as GlobalProtect)? What does that look like from an administration standpoint.
Palo gp is way better. Grass isn’t greener
Ill highly recommend you staying with the global protect solution since its directly integrated with your firewall solution plus the fact that you can implement user -id and so many other security feature while having this vpn solution is a plus that windows or any other solution"except other ngfw client" will give you. Plus in the near feature im expecting palo alto to use the client for more than only a vpn client …
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Having done VPN solutions for years upon years (16) as a consultant, GlobalProtect is pretty much one of the best.
The built in Windows VPN will just leave you scratching your head and asking why.
There are some open source clients you can use, but then you shift away from your VPN headend being able to manage the software (and fail between IPSec/SSL dynamically) to just using IPSec.
TLDR; GlobalProtect is amazing.
If you download GP from the Windows Store it will accessible from the Windows 10 VPN setting. A few things to note it does not work with SAML, and it registers the client as UWP if you use OS HIP checks.
Windows direct connect is what you’re thinking of. And no. It isn’t better or even as good as global protect.
