Opera GX vs Brave in 2023

I’ve been using Opera GX for the past two years, and I must say, I’ve been drawn to its beautiful design, extensive extension library, and the ability to customize themes. However, recently I decided to give Brave a try and discovered some interesting aspects that made me question my choice. Here’s my take on the Opera GX vs Brave debate.

Firstly, let’s talk about the VPN and firewall. One of the reasons I was initially attracted to Opera GX was its built-in VPN, which provided an extra layer of security. But when I installed Brave, I learned that its VPN and firewall aren’t free and require a subscription. This was a bit disappointing as I had come to appreciate the convenience of having these features readily available in Opera GX.

That being said, after watching a video on Opera GX’s practices, I started having second thoughts. The video pointed out some concerning aspects, such as its integration into pop-ups leading to potential malware and the issue of data privacy. It mentioned that Opera GX’s parent company is located in China, which raised questions about potential surveillance and data access. Additionally, the video revealed how Opera GX tracked geolocation data, which could be worrisome for some users.

So which browser is better despite its downsides

Just gotta remember 1 thing, free vpn takes its cost as your data

Opera’s VPN is not a true vpn

Its a Proxy server

A free VPN is almost always out to get your data and exploit your privacy. They have to pay for servers somehow. I’ve been using Brave + Mulvad for a couple years and they remain my go to options. I wouldn’t touch that spyware infested Opera GX if you paid me to.

I’m using Brave from long time ago and its the best. Gived a chance to Opera time ago but nothing compared to Brave.

I tried opera many times within a certain time frame. Each time I had to uninstall after a few minutes use. Opera is great but have too many “features” that makes it too complicated and seems heavy.

Opera GX didn’t have the “cast” option available in my region due to some obscure "regional permission issues. This could be bypassed by tinkering with the browser’s locale file.
Brave (the one I was using at the time) didn’t have said issue, so I deleted GX.

Curious, what don’t you like about that business model? Or what’s the alternative you prefer for revenue?

Chrome collects user data, Firefox and Vivaldi rely on search engine partnerships from Google/Microsoft which collect user data. Honest question as I’ve seen people mention this before and I’m not following.

But if that’s the case, how come Brave is charging for Firewall protection and other security protocol features

What browser do u use

Tempest at the moment. It is quite new, but im already loving it. Its basically cleaner Brave without all the bloat, crypto crap etc. Pretty much Chrome without Google plus privacy enhancements. Plus iOS browser looks great. Android is in the works and devs said it will come soon.
Oh yeah and it already has a sync and its own Search Engine which works better than DDG or BS for me. Im honestly surprised people dost talk about it more, sure, its pretty much technically beta, but still.

You could just say whatever you want without doing… this.

i mean i only use it cuz of the whatsapp sidebar, chatgpt integration.

Brave’s business model takes out all adverts which are not theirs and inputs their own?

Cool thanks for sharing about Tempest!

That’s pretty my main reason of why I switch to it sometimes, ChatGPT integration is huge.
For whatsapp, I don’t like it a lot and I even noticed that my voice notes sent by Opera haven’t a great and clean sound compared to Firefox.

To be fair all browsers have some kind of telemetry. Brave, even Firefox. Kinda normal these days. Devs need some basic info, like how many people actually uses their browser etc. Thats not something i would take automatically as a bad thing

i must have got it wrong, please explain their business model to me

Okay, so Brave supress original ads, and then they serve you pop up ads of their own - and then they send some measly revenue to website creators in a form of a shitty cryptocurrency.
Wow, thats not shady and twisted at all.

You sound extremely biased and not very intelligent. Are there some practices from Brave that aren’t the best? Sure. Comparatively though, when it comes to privacy, it is hands down much better than Opera GX.
