Oh boy... I thought Outbytes was "safe"

Oh boy… I thought Outbytes was “safe”

A bit of a story here for reference. My laptop, a while ago, had blacked out while I was on YT, refusing to turn back on. Had it checked by a computer guy, and after trying to figure out what could’ve happened, we ultimately decided to wipe it completely, as he discovered that the motherboard had corrupted.

I’m not sure how that occurred, but nonetheless it needed to be removed, as it was attempting to corrupt the replacement parts.

Now, my laptop is new and fresh, with a recent aes makeover (bg, taskbar, etc). My windows prompted multiple updates to make up for the complete reset, but I believe after it had done so, it messed with the bluetooth driver and wifi/network for whatever reason. Maybe it was now outdated and incompatible, but nonetheless, it disabled itself and would refuse to connect to either anymore.

That’s when I decided to find a site that would give me a bluetooth driver. Outbytes was praised on reviews, and I didn’t find anything particularly weird, so I decided to install it to help with the bluetooth issue.

Anyway, that’s the backstory. Installed Malewarebytes because my parent suggested that perhaps the wifi and bluetooth wasn’t functioning because of malware. I don’t think Outbytes was responsible for this, but most definitely it contributed to my laptop’s now senile behavior.

I don’t know what to make of this info (the picture above). Any comments are definitely appreciated. Is Outbytes truly unruly?

All 117 detections are related to Outbytes btw

Just large strings of PUP.Optional.Outbyte
“.dll”, “.rtf”, “.bpl”, “.db”, “.lnk”, and a good few ".exe"s

I’m— not quite adept on these terms haha but 117 is still a concerning amount when it’s not just Adware.

Yeh, don’t use any driver update software. Even the once that official came with my motherboard and graphic cards wrecked my PC and they are official distributers. It’s crazy what makes them think this is justifiable they generally install conflicting stuff and malware stuff cause it’s prob how they make money. Just download only the drivers from the specific part, not even their driver manager

Very old post, but to any new viewers, never use driver updater apps.

If you’re using an HP, I figured this out myself, but there’s an official drivers download page on the official HP website. I’m certain this is the case with many others.

You screen looks exactly like mine right now. Almost identical.

Outbyte flagged as malware in malwarebytes. Time to get rid of it.

OutByte, can’t be anyone else offering Driver Updater and PC Repair. This is my story, I pay a subscription for PIA (private internet access) no explanation needed it speaks for itself! Along with it came a years free subscription to RESTORO, A Cleanup Utility. Have tested it on a Virtual Machine, seems to work pretty good! The advert also promoted Driver Updater and PC Repair., from a Microsoft Silver Status Partner! Now, I can only speak from personal experience and will leave it to others to judge whether I have been the victim of an ingenius scam. Back end of 2022, I downloaded Driver Updater and having run a scan, paid for the product, received a Licence Code and applied it’s driver replacement recommendations to my WIN 11 Pro Set-Up. The application forces a reboot. Something I would always do after an update. My System Crashed. OS could not find the boot file! Could not be repaired, tried multiple ways to repair. Repeatedly got the message 'System could not be repaired! Having spent 15 years as a programmer, systems analyst, developer, I know my way around Windows via the Command Prompt. I did the usual clean-up tasks, and one of the checks returns a count of the number of instances that Windows exists on my disk/s. The value returned zero! WHAT!!! No surprise OS could not be repaired as it thinks that the OS does not exist!!! Long story short, got the system back up. Spoke to Simon (definitely not his real name, only used for public facing reasons!), on Live Chat to ask whether Outbyte’s software could have been the cause. 'Definitely not was the response, no correlation between the OS and the App. Funny that, as the App has to be written to run in that environment, right? I have actually spoken to him in the flesh, definitely not a Simon, or Malcolm, or Gary, unless they are popular names on the Indian Sub-Continent these days. Simon or Harbinder or whatever his name was, sought permission to access my system via RAS (their version!). I obliged and watched him check the version of the software which he reported as out-of-date. He transferred another version to my system and strangely shipped over another Licence Code. In my World once a Licence has been issued for a particular Product, any subsequent updates to the same Product should be covered by the original licence. I queried this and was told that I now had the latest version and because it had transitioned out of beta status, it was issued with a new code. Seemed plausable!!! Ran a couple of times, no issues! Then it happened again, same scenario, RAS Link-Up, delve into Device Manager, Live Chat msg to confirm leaving session and request to re-boot. Whilst a system reinstall is a pain in the neck, the beauty of the check value being zero, means that you cannot take the option to completely wipe the system clean. So all your third party data is preserved because only OS gets installed and WIN 11 is so advanced that it automatically re-activates all the added Apps, Router Passwords etc. etc. applied since the last installation! Now I can see a money making scam here. 1. First time around I was charged a repeat fee for a replacement version. 2. I asked for a copy of the Silver Status Accreditation from Microsoft, to be told no need because the logo was present on Outbytes Web Site (not anymore! no mention anywhere, Strange That!) 3. I tried ringing the International Number I was called on, the one time I actually spoke to a person and got the ‘Automated Number Not Recognised, please contact Supervisor’ message. Maybe I am being cynical, but I think not!! Buyer beware!! .

A little late to save you, but whenever I see a google result like this that says ‘Download X’ to… your PC. I automatically go to google and key in ‘(product name) malware’ and waalaa! Invariably google lights up w/links telling me that yes! Product is full of friendly neighbourhood malware!

Yuuup… this is total bullshit. This ting just deleted all my vst-plugins for Ableton. And I can’t restore it due to some recovery error. Contacted PC Repair support and you know what they told me? To just reinstall all the ~30 plugins
So yeah, I cant recommend anyone to use it

Normalmente me suscribo a IOBIT DRIVER BOOSTER.

The mother board doesn’t get “corrupted”. It is a piece of hardware that doesn’t change unless it gets fried. Only the software that runs the computer hardware gets corrupted.

it totally destroyed my computer

Bonjour,

J’ai eu le même souci avec Outbytes pour moi c’était 205 fichiers merci a Malwarebytes de les avoir tous supprimé

car a chaque fois que je vais sur YouTube PAF! écran bleu j’espère que je n’aurais plus le même problème

I just ran into this software on a customer computer. I used ASW Cleaner first and that Pc Repair popped up like it was a virus …lol removed it and glad the customer detected a problem as his computer was blue screening

I just bought, then quickly uninstalled the Outbyte Driver Updater, after reading many stories. I’m down 40 Dollars, but what can ya do. I recently bought this 2018 Lenovo and I really wanted to make use of it, and sure enough the computer kept flashing me the Outbyte thing.

From now on, only drivers I need are what Microsoft recommends.

I downloaded outbytes driver update through Microsoft on to my gateway laptop and it doesn’t work anymore I can’t get past the login screen. The keyboard stopped working I can’t type anything. When I hooked it to my desk top it said the original driver was missing and it has no driver currently. WTF happened how do I fix this?

Outbytes is just crapware. Basically it’s just another one of those ‘driver updater/PC optimiser’ that claims to be good but actually do nothing to help your PC at all.

bro i thoght i was safe too

IT CORRUPTED MY USER PROFILE

Did Malwarebytes cure the outbyte infestation? Somehow my keyboard has been disabled after an outbyte driver update
