True our lives dont revolve around an app but at least for me it was a creative outlet with real people in real communities
It’s more than entertainment and doomscrolling. It’s genuinely how ppl learn things that are happening and connect with ppl around the world. The U.S has profited BILLIONS from the app. TikTok has done soo much for ppl like small businesses, and even major industries. having something like thus being taken away from ppl who walk the “land of the free” is INSANE. and you saying touch grass is just ignorant.
I was in the middle of downloading content I wanted to keep. I’d just like to at least finish that.
VPN ON web browser version is working
Because TikTok doesn’t track through IP Addresses alone.
They go through:
- SIM Card Region
- Device System Settings
- IP Address
Doesn’t matter if you use a VPN if your Device Region is set to USA.
Also, it doesn’t matter if you do that as your SIM Card Region will also be USA.
“then…how is it operating in other places not in the US?”
Because they have servers across the world. USA is not the only region on the planet.
In the world of servers, there’s the concept of regions.
Servers in the USA region are down, which is where our accounts and content lived.
People who use it in Canada or Europe are using the north American or Europe regions. Their accounts are on servers in those regions.
Like literally their copy of their accounts are outside the US. And our accounts are literally here inside the US.
For an American to use tiktok again, you will need to VPN out of the American region and register as if you are a user in another region.
That’s a good try! But, depending on how good the “branches” of Tiktok are at detecting things that like you to the US, genuinely, good luck. The slighest thing like your phone number, serial number, and even the code within photos in your gallery could legit give you away.
I know but my point is the same. Very very few people will bother with a vpn. Most will just find some other platform or give up that part of their life. So the value of the effort is reduced to near zero, which makes the issue worse
Hope you voted trump
not for me. which vpn? I’m using surfshark.
Which one and country? Was it after the ban
Are you watching it without your account or logged in
So why doesn’t pornhub or literally any other reason I’ve ever used a vpn for done this? Is there another example of something you literally can’t access with a vpn from America just because it’s not available in America?
My suspicion is that no one has ever had a reason to do so, and TikTok is doing more than required for the sake of political theater. The only thing worse than TikTok being dead is TikTok being compromised.
This is so correct.
Lots of tech enthusiasts are about to learn more about regions and administration today.
Assuming you can VPN out of the US region and register in another, you will also need to account for Tik Toks diligence in how they assess your region as well. They, and most services, don’t just assume your region by IP. There’s tons of ways to do so! For example, on android, when an app asks for your phone permission it’s usually to assess your region
I’m a South African living in Poland. I got the same message.
I have a South African SIM and a Polish SIM in my phone. My phone is set to use UK English.
Even when I lived in Russia during the ban there I could access TikTok by using a simless device with a VPN, so why isn’t it working for me?
What about a laptop? I tried vpn on that and it didn’t work.
I’m tech illiterate, I thought that’s what the VPN was for. Why does a VPN work for literally everything else but not this. Like why isn’t the pornhub ban the same way as the TikTok ban is essentially what I’m getting at.
Your last paragraph is what I was trying to do. But I can’t even access the landing page with a VPN. It sending me to /us-landing
There are a lot of formal tools supplied by android and ios for assessing region. There’s also a lot of informal ways to assess your region like you’re presenting here.
And of all platforms on earth, I think tiktok is particularly on the cutting edge of using every tool and trick in the book to assess region, so as far as trying to get around a companies blocks, I think tiktok would need the very most effort to accomplish that when compared to evading regions in Netflix for example
