Hello everyone! I recently moved to China last December and have had to use VPN’s to access my online content. In my search for good VPN’s that I can game on, I have bought 3. 2 are for a year - AirVPN, StrongVPN; one is for a month - ExpressVPN. I am not very intuitive with the computer networking stuff, though I can get around if I had someone tell me the basic gist of how to do something.
On all 3 VPN’s I have just downloaded the programs and run them from that. I have not done anything else to configure them. I am not very computer savvy. Is there something else I should be doing to allow my computer to have better latency/connectivity?
Even while hooked to a VPN, my traffic is miserably slow while accessing Netflix, Facebook, etc. I try to hook to USA VPN servers, though I have tried Hong Kong and Singapore/Taiwan with the same results.
I play games that hook to the North American servers (Blizzard games) and my Battlenet Ping is ATROCIOUS (4-6k ms home/world at times) both on the VPN and not. I allowed my firewall to connect directly to Blizzards addresses but it doesn’t seem to work. I have even cut my firewall out completely and tried that.
What can I do to help my VPN connection stay solid, besides buying yet ANOTHER VPN and checking it out? ANYTHING is appreciated. I have tried asking Blizzard, StrongVPN, and the WoW reddit community and haven’t come up with much answers. I just wanna play my games on my days off =(
Your VPN connection will never be good enough to play US based games in China. (At least those which require a decent ping speed anyway).
Is it possible your internet connection is slow? I also live in China and my “unshared” internet connection is definitely shared as it slows down when people get home from work.
I use Astrill and it’s pretty quick and very beginner friendly.
the 4-6 second delay is indeed atrocious. What games are you playing? Only WoW? Hearthstone should do alright with the delay.
Also, you can check if the VPN that you’ve subscribed to has PPTP or L2TP support and see if it works better? I’m presuming that the programs that you’ve downloaded is based on OpenVPN.
The thing is that Blizz has a data center decently close (was in Singapore, now in Aus) that I can play on servers based there… but it is the same. Slow speeds and constant kicking. I have a feeling it directly has to do with the battle.net service but I have yet to have a Tech answer my questions with any solid answers in the last 2 weeks of asking on the forums.
StrongVPN has a PPTP, L2TP (I use this), and SSTP connection option when logging into a server. L2TP connects, PPTP doesn’t connect all the time for me. I tend to use this service more as AirVPN drops connection constantly and tries to connect me to UK servers, though it is more distance traveled…easier to just hop the pacific in the other direction.
During the day the internet isn’t so good so games are a no-go, but after about 11pm I can play WoW sometimes, but never well enough to do anything other than “farmville Garrison stuff”… Diablo is unplayable (even at the 3am “best internet time”) as well as Hearthstone. Hearthstone lags out and I auto concede because the connectivity is just shit.
Battlenet will lose connection and kick me from whatever game I am playing, but I will not drop total internet connection.
It could be. I am using China Telecom, I don’t know the current speed or anything. Next week I am having a local help me go in and ask questions. Hopefully I can get some sort of answers, without too much information lost in translation lol
I have traceroutes as well as pathpings for all servers I did while not on the VPN… and when I posted in the Tech forums I stated I had them and I got no response. They all time out between 12-17 jumps.
When I try AirVPN I hook to Netherlands area and it was ok for a bit but China really cracked down on VPN’s at the beginning of the year. When that happened all VPN’s kind of took a shit but as of about 3 weeks ago they started becoming useful again. I haven’t tried it again since then, maybe it is better? On StrongVPN they limit your server jumps (I know, stupid) and which you can attach to. If I want to shell out more money I will get more server hops and access to more servers but I don’t think the service works as well as I want so I won’t be giving them any more money than I have.
I did all of the traceroutes at “decent” internet time (12am). I will try again tonight with both VPN’s and see what they say! It’s only 2:10pm here now and if I try the numbers will be skewed as the internet at this time is unplayable lol.
