I think they added more regions to block the IP, so now you need a VPN to launch the games. Once the game is running you can stop the VPN and continue playing, the game itself just need internet and the ID from DMM, nothing more (for now)

OpenVPN is free and Proton too but idk if does have a japan server, some paid ones like AvastVPN or NordVPN works fine too. Any VPN that connects to japan works fine
you can try urbanvpn, there is a japan server as option and it’s work for me

Tunnel Bear works it has a Japan server but it’s slow so when I open DMM there I have to exclude the game even if it doesn’t use the VPN, Proton has a Japan server but I think you can’t choose which server to use if you use the free version.I don’t know if I explained it well English is not my first language,
