What out-of-touch person comes up with this and thinks it is OK to run with? How do they have anyone getting hired there?

“Likely after your resignation” so you’re in limbo and screwed if they say anything negative.

Why yes I’d like to date you, but I’ll want you to introduce me to some of your ex’es and former in-laws so I can ask about your previous relationships and double-check some of the details. You’re OK with that, right?

Wait…where are you going??? *confused face*

So… they want you to resign your current position and then get the manager that is now in a bind trying to find someone new to take time to gush up about how great you were and if that doesn’t work out… well… you already resigned so even if they do offer you the position… which is a massive if, they can offer you whatever salary you want because you are unemployed.

I had an employer ask for a reference from my current supervisor. I told them no. They said it was a hard requirement. I told them no again. I still got the job.

Most larger companies prohibit managers from giving references due to liability issues. HR will be happy to confirm title and dates, but nothing else.

Ironic this comes from a company that makes privacy products, no?

All of my previous managers are dead. One flew into the twin towers on 9/11. Others just old age. I suppose I could schedule a séance.

Give me all the people that previously held this job and let me interview them. Also if a rando company phoned me up and asked for an hour of my time after stealing an employee I’d tell them to fcuk right off!

This sounds like a way to get out of promissory estoppel, since you resigned before they made an offer. I don’t think it would work, but it makes me think they rescind a lot of offers and are probably pretty terrible to work for anyway.

I had a look at their interviews section on Glassdoor; it’s basically filled with negative reviews bashing the unreasonable process.

Just switch your VPN to another country to access a different interview process

Policy was to verify that they worked there and to/from dates. Why would I as a manager/owner risk liability by saying anything more.

You current and former employers are allowed to only confirm your employment. Anything more is prohibited. Sounds like ExpressVPN doesn’t trust their own management to make good choices.

Not only would that be a huge and loud NO, but also very illegal in the US.

Edit: well, not specifically illegal, but more like policy. If what the company says about you isn’t 100% factual they open themselves to a world of hurt. So most will just verify you worked there and if they’d rehire you

Sure thing! His name is Charles E. Cheese, and his number is 555-get-bent.

That’s a big fat fucking no.

LMAO what!? “Make sure you quit, then let us talk to your former boss and see if they still have good things to say about you.” I KNOW this HR manager’s gotta be hittin the crack pipe!

Why would anyone who wasn’t absolutely desperate agree to those terms? This must reduce their candidate pool by 99%.
