Looking to use a VPN for my workplace

I (and others) often work remotely but whilst away we need to connect to access files from the local server in the office. I believe it’s a bit of a old fashioned set up since it’s not cloud based, but because of the internet infrastructure on the street cloud based servers like Azure are not recommended just yet.

Previously I’ve used the Windows built in VPN via L2TP with a preshared key, but this is on my old laptop. I’ve been given a new one but for some reason this method isn’t working on newer laptops (mine and my colleague’s), the setting are the same etc, but different result.

I use NordVPN for personal use and I was wondering if there’s a way that I can use this to set up a connection to allow me to replicate the windows VPN and permit access to the office server etc and map the network drive.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Unless you work in IT you should not attempt to implement a VPN on your own…

This is referred to as Shadow IT and very likely could get you fired.

Thank you for the advice. This is what I suspected but I just wanted to confirm.

Just one additional question, do you think meshnet would be suitable for accessing the server at the office?

Thanks for the advice.
My director is aware of what I’m looking into (and has encouraged me to explore further) and so the risk is very low. The investigation is a result of our IT company proposing a large monthly fee for VPN services, when previously our payments for this service have been 5-10% of the fee quoted.

Be careful. Some companies can automatically detect VPN connections and lock you out of your work account. You should explore if VPNs are even allowed in the first place.
