I’m interested in browsing the dark web but I don’t know whether or not using a virtual machine with tails os would keep me safe.
Yes. But I always recommend booting from live USB if you’re in a hostile area or ultra paranoid circumstances.
If live USB isn’t an option and you must use a VM, you can do something like this :
- Boot Virtualbox (using as an example)
- Create new VM, pick Linux
- Do not create a virtual disk drive (skip it)
- Select your memory requirements, etc - just click through the rest of the options until the VM is configured.
- Now go back into the VM’s properties and for storage, click on your controller (for example “Controller: IDE” and select to use a Live/CD and point it at the ISO for tails.
- Save your VM configuration
- Boot
This gives you many of the same benefits of booting a live USB, but within a VM.
HOWEVER: Depending on the VM software you use, it’ll still logging events like VM startup, shutdown, configuration/HW errors, etc. For the ultra-paranoid, you can delete the VM after every use and set it up fresh every time.
Ensure your hard drive is encrypted with key of reasonable length, especially if you’re in a hostile area.
Or, just boot from live USB - much easier.
Onion services aren’t inherently dangerous. As long as you have common sense, don’t commit any crime or download&run random files, you’ll be perfectly fine. You only need Tor Browser, no other software is required.

Yep, it’s safe. I’ve been using Tails on a VM for quite a while now, and I haven’t had any problems.
Keep you safe from what? It isn’t illegal to browse the dark web?
You can browse the dark web securely from any device.
But if you want to look around and touch everything without a second thought you should use a VM.
Ur probably safe browsing tor on a regular computer no VPN.
just use windows 10. windows defender will protecc u
Yes and no. Yes if your VM is whonix. You can run tails on a VM but it’s not recommended. It is meant to run on USB. Whonix is specifically designed to run through VM.
Linux on VM, some good proxy and u’re prob safe if u know what u doin’
It’s safe to browse on your regular PC
Any suggestions for surfing with no vpn?
True but still if you get cures and click on a link that u don’t where it takes u, it’s better to have safety first if you by accidentally visit a illegal sites. Which is a LOOT of in the dark web…
Safe from Big greedy corps that wants our soul
Vms can leave a trace on the local pc though right? If he wants to be truly safe use tails on a spare computer without any drives plugged in
Does whonix come pre-installed with tor?
