Is getting a VPN worth it?

So I’ve heard of VPNs before and never thought about getting one. But the more time I’m on the net with my phone or computer, especially when I’m on set phone in public or places like hotel WiFi, should I invest in getting one?

It depends. As others have said, if you’re using HTTPS, you already have some protection. But who knows if all the background services (updaters, cron jobs, etc) in your system are using HTTPS (TLS) ? Occasionally you will have to turn off the VPN to access some site, but that’s pretty rare in my experience.

Some benefits of using a VPN:

  • hide info from your ISP, a company which already knows far too much about you

  • hide info from other devices on your LAN, and your router, which is especially important if you’re on public Wi-Fi

  • make it a little harder for web sites to track you

  • defeat geo-locking by some services

  • some VPNs provide malware-site blocking, ad-blocking, parental controls features

For public places? Definitely.

For your house? Well, it depends if you want to watch streaming services from other countries and download things in private.

It’s like basic hygiene for your internet data.

Facebook demonstrates daily that your private data is worth something and a VPN is one step to protecting your privacy.

When you’re connected on a public wifi, whoever owns that Wi-Fi hotspot has potential to read all your traffic, so that’s probably the most important place to have VPN for security.

It depends on what you want a VPN for.

If you want a VPN for at least some privacy (like when using your phone in public places), then it could give you a little more privacy … providing you can make a VPN connection (that is not always guaranteed).

Do you walk around in public naked so EVERYONE can see all your stuff? A VPN is like clothes for your internet.

I don’t think it’s worth it.- Netflix is cracking down on people using VPNs. Can be a hit and miss sometimes but it’s getting harder.

- Most of the time it does not work on Amazon Prime, it recognizes you’re using a VPN and tells you to turn it off. Same with Disney+

- Does not work on Paramount plus.

- On PlayStation Network, if you get caught purchasing something not available in your country but is available in another, they’ll close your whole account. Say good buy too all your years of games and progress.

- Things like your bank account, credit card accounts, etcetera will tell you to turn it off or even lock you out of your account.

- Got locked out of my HBO account for 2 weeks after logging in with a VPN.

As long as you always clear you cache & cookies and web data after you’re done surfing online, you should be okay with out one. I turn off the internet and put my phone in airplane mode if I’m out in public and don’t need to be connected.

Almost everything you do on your phone is encrypted via https. Unless you are specifically using a really old application that doesn’t use https there is no reason to have a VPN. Attackers will only be able to see which websites you are connecting to and how much data you are sending as well as the ports you are using.

YES
It worth enough due to data protection, privacy, IP Protection, Turkey server for sending voice in Twitter Direct Messages.

Worth something how?

But clothes can easily taken off. Isn’t that right? A VPN is not hard to hack.

Any better alternative to a VPN?

Attackers will only be able to see which websites you are connecting to

Which, to some, is plenty of reason to use a VPN.

In regards to VPN or VPS ip-addresses … yes, more and more web sites are practicing blatant discrimination against these blocs.

For example, CNBC (that ‘liberal’ news channel) bans many VPN/VPS ip-addresses.

Are you being sarcastic? Genuinely asking

Sorry for going off topic, but I just realised that you are able to reply to a comment posted 2 years ago. Did Reddit remove the duration limit of 6 months for post interactions?

It all depends on your use case. If it’s really that important to hide which websites you visit to the WiFi host or to WiFi hackers bit they will still see your traffic as vpn traffic which looks like your hiding something so for the average internet user a vpn isint necessary unless they are trying to get past geo restrictions or get past restricted wifi

I am being genuine. Do you have anything worth to add?

Honestly, I’m not sure about it bro.
