I’ve never not been asked for a credit card for a free trial before. And I didn’t even sign up for this free trial; I just got this email one day.
A lot of things in IT does this. And Slack’s main demographic is IT workers and businesses.
I’m currently working on a website and we have to use third party user authentication. I have an unlimited “pro” plan for testing the integration and all I needed was tell them my email and set a password, don’t even have to verify my email until I decide to move it to production/live.
Wow…
Some people keep around a zero balance pre paid card for free trials.
They also use it occasionally when services refuse to let us take the last card they have used off file.
This was one of my favorite things in tech for a while.
I’d bet money that Salesforce puts an end to this.
Slack is pretty awesome.
I’ve always thought for me personally if I saw this I would be more inclined to purchase it. Mainly because when they ask for your details it’s almost seems like they’re baiting you into forgetting about it until the trail is over, especially the ones that when you cancel the subscription it doesn’t give you until the end of the month or so period to continue using it. It shows that they have faith in their product and know that people will spend money for it without needed to trick them into it.
Dropbox does this!! Had to upgrade so I can download all my old photos. Didn’t require a credit card.
Photobucket on the other hand, said “fuck you pay me”. What a joy to use. NOT.
How do they keep corporate vultures from ruining a good thing?
Slack is class-act, in my experiences with them.
On principal, every trial that requires CC I immediately cancel and never pay. I hate this with a passion and I’ll never give any company that does this a dime.
I don’t know if it’s usable worldwide, but there’s app named revolut, where you can generate disposable debit cards that cease to exist after single use. I don’t know if it is usable in these free trials, but it’s super convienient regardless, as you don’t have to worry about someone charging you more than once (or put a card info on shady sites).

I have one of these, I tired to get the free trial for Spotify, I got an error saying they didn’t detect any money in the account…
There’s also a similar app called privacy.com that allows you to use randomly generated virtual card numbers that are either single use or tied to a specific merchant. Ive been using it for years and it’s saved me a couple times from having my card stolen
I used to just use fakenamegenerator.com a few decades ago.
