My family moved to France a few months ago and we’re struggling to find a vpn compatible with Apple TV. What systems (Apple tv, fire stick, roku etc) do I need and what vpn (or other service/method) can I get to watch American television without screen sharing from my computer?

We used (paid for) ExpressVPN. On an AppleTV it allows you to edit its DNS Server address to one provided with your ExpressVPN subscription. This essential throws all your streaming traffic through a VPN which allowed us to have access to all our “American” stuff

Easiest would be setting up a VPN router. You can buy a preprogrammed one from most of the larger commerical VPN providers (ExpressVPN, Witopia, etc) or set up your own.
Any device connected to that router will go through the VPN, therefore no need to deal with special settings on the AppleTV - you just connect to the router like you would to any other WiFi network.
I have a pretty great set up. I can help you if you’d like. I reboot my smart tv, found it’s code (for Samsung smart tvs) online, used it to go into the factory settings, changed it to turn US which gave me access to all the US apps (Hulu, Max, we use YouTube tv for regular cable, Peacock, ESPN) and then just change the DNS number in internet settings to the one provided by ExpeessVPN. Works perfectly for 5 years now. Message me, I’ll walk you through the whole thing if you’d like.
Thank you! I’m not tech literate at all. Would you mind explaining what a dns server is, and would this allow me to access all my individual subscriptions (hbo, Amazon prime etc) or would I have to log the vpn into each app individually when I watch a show?
Any clue if this is available with nordvpn? I’m looking through it and can’t find an option—unless by dns it’s the same address as the ip address they give us?

This is the way to go for ease of use. Express VPN in particulars sells quality routers set up out of the box for this exact kind of use.

To be honest I’m not sure what it does, just that it worked. And no, it just sits in the network settings of the Apple TV and your apps should work as they should. You may have to log in again, etc.
