My concern is this is being portrayed as being all about porn. It’s actually much, much bigger than porn. Consider these things…
1: Social Media is also required to ID every single person who accesses the service from Utah, every time they visit the site.
2: We are going to be forced to upload our government issued ID to every single social media site, every time we visit them. You think they already have too much of your personal info? This is going to take it up to the next level.
3: Pornhub is suggesting device authentication - this is even worse. You will lose all anonymity online if your device is literally tied to your government issued ID.
4: The inevitable compromise is some 3rd party company will register you, take your ID, and give you a login to their service. You will then login with them before accessing porn, social media, or whatever. Of course, they’ll charge you a subscription fee for this, and every site will use a different service to handle this. So you’ll lose your internet anonymity, it’ll cost an arm and a leg to do the things you currently do for free, some sketchy companies will have your ID and credit card info on file so you better hope there is never a data breach, and you’ll be logging in over and over to various services every time you open an app or change websites (the definition of social media is pretty all encompassing to include a lot of sites that you wouldn’t think are social media now).
And in all of these cases, your internet anonymity is gone. So next time there is a protest - be it in the streets of downtown or at the capitol, they will immediately pull the ID of everyone that viewed discussions about it and start hauling people in. Next time you say (whatever politician) is an idiot, be prepared to get a subpoena when he uses his deep pockets to sue you. Next time wikileaks gets info that the U.S. is breaking the law and spying on its own citizens, Edward Snowden will be arrested immediately because they’ll have his ID. And anyone who downloaded his info will also be tracked by their ID.
This is some unbelievable stuff going on here. It’s being sold to people as “protect the children” but that’s not what this is at all.

They have system-wide VPN and browser extensions, so you can double-hop, if that matters at all. Very few VPNs do GREAT at everything, but https://restoreprivacy.com/vpn/reviews/windscribe/ seems to mirror my thoughts on them. So, don’t do something NSA will be looking for you on, but for getting around Utah’s or Netflix’s incoming bullshit, it does pretty well and is easy to use. 10GB free or their prices aren’t bad.
