I want to host a VPN in the states to watch netflix, youtube, disney plus, etc. How much bandwidth do I need? someone told me I need to be careful with traffic limits, what is a good traffic limit for this?
4K streaming takes roughly 7 GB per hour according to Netflix & Disney+, assuming you watch 5 hours a day, that’s a little over 1 TB traffic per month, for each in & out, check with your ISP/VPS provider how they calculate the traffic usage.
The international (some quoted numbers are only for local traffic) upstream and local (because it’s directly from local CDN to your VPN) downstream need to be both over 25 Mbps, because the data flows both ways.
If you’re fine with Full HD, it’s 3 GB per hour or 450 GB per month with 5 Mbps.
15 to 25 MBits. Netflix is 7mbits lowest 4K and 15mbits best 4K. itunes 4K movies with Dolby Atmos are 25mbits. So that you have an idea.
