We are in the process of purchasing few licenses for a lab project. I guess we don’t need the vpn license for sslvpn connections towards fortinet. Please correct me if I am wrong.
The licenses will be needed only when we enable the endpoint compliance and other features.i read about this somewhere long back. Just wanted to confirm if that is still the status or is that changed.

Centrally managing vpn clients, and the always-on and zerotrust features are what require additional paid licenses. Otherwise the vpn-only client is fine, and can do sslvpn with either local-to-FortiGate, or IdP integrated logins via ldap, radius or SAML, including with MFA controlled by the external IdP.
Free forticlient does not come with support. Just know that going in. For a lab you should be fine though.
