Does a VPN hide your location when you're on a live web chat?

More specifically, a live web chat on a suicide prevention website, where the chat operator would normally be able to track you to send police to your location.

To an extent yes. When you connect to a website the website owners can see your IP address which they can’t do much with alone but they could hand your IP address over to law enforcement which with a warrant could go to your Internet service provider(Spectrum, Verizon. Xfinity etc…) and ask them to identify who owns this IP then they could track you down to your address. When you use a VPN all your traffic gets encrypted and “tunnelled” to a VPN server then from there your traffic hits the internet. So from the websites point of view you’re coming from the VPN server and they can’t see who you truly are. Just make sure you don’t accept any “share my location” prompts because some of these use GPS which is unaffected by VPN. To be super safe I would use tails which you can burn to a USB then boot to and it routes all your traffic though TOR which is like a super VPN and it’s pretty much impossible to track. Just look up”how to make tails USB” on YouTube.

OP, are you OK? You sound like you are in a dark place, and it’s OK to talk to people about it.

I hope you or whoever you’re referring to is okay. People are here to talk if you ever need to.

Sry I’m not better help. Idk. Best guess is yes, maybe that plus private or tor on (using brave browser - which can further protect you from tracking).

Main thing is I hope you find the support you need, friend.

A properly tunneled VPN will fully hide your IP and, hopefully, not keep any connection logs as to not have any info to hand over to law enforcement.

I’d advise against using them for this purpose, they aren’t likely to instantly send anybody over to you, and if they are, it’s likely because they’re concerned for your safety. Talking to suicide prevention is a good step in the right direction, but I hope you stay safe and get any help you may need.
