Hi everyone!
I’m in a bit of a pickle at the moment, as I’m going abroad to stay with family for 1 month (Romania) and planning to work remotely from there. The issue is that my company’s policy is very complicated about working abroad, so I couldn’t really tell them I’m going away.
I connect to my work system via Pulse Secure VPN, so my concern is that I will have issues connecting from Romania or that my company will find out I’m working from a location other than the UK.
Is there anything I can do to get around this? I’m not sure I can have two VPNs, but I would really appreciate anyone’s help on how to do it. I know it’s really cheeky, but I haven’t seen my family in over a year and I’m desperate to go
Thanks a lot for any suggestions!
You can get a router with VPN support (gli net routers on Amazon are a good choice) and connect to the company VPN through that router.
There are ways to detect where you are but assuming you are using a laptop, never connect that laptop to any other router than the one connected to your VPN router. Make sure the failsafe option is enabled and test it before you go.
i stayed in Thailand for three months using pulse secure and no one said anything. from NY
Pulse secure was even iffy in the states though. It was the application not the internet connection.
I am in the exact same situation. Did you find a way to work abroad? Thanks a lot
What did you end up doing? In a similar situation.
A better approach would be to use a VPN service on the router like ExpressVPN to an endpoint in the US. Then from the laptop connect to the corporate VPN as usual. It will make the laptop VPN connection appear as though it’s connected to the corporate VPN from the United States.
I have a GLI router and do this regularly.
That’s awesome, thanks so much! Would I need to install the VPN on my laptop? I can’t install any unapproved software. Thanks so much again, you’re the real mvp!
Oh, that’s good to know! I’ll get a vpn router too just in case. Really hoping it’ll all work without issues!
I think that’s why a reply above mentioned the failsafe option
You’d want to make sure there was an option to just block outbound traffic if the VPN connection fails
Good question, I’d like to know too! Also, damn that sounds super intense and stressful
I got a Glinet vpn box (for like £25 on amazon) with NordVPN that I connected to the wifi router. So instead of connecting to the wifi router for internet, I’d connect directly to the vpn box which had the UK IP. Hope this helps!
Same. I am planning on going to South America for a few weeks. I use a personal PC for work and it is just for email with Outlook and the intranet. We do use Okta for single sign on. I want to know what VPN to use to appear in my city.
Thanks for clarifying my answer
I forgot one part.
Thanks so much for your reply! Sorry, I’m being a little thick. How do I connect to ExpressVPN to an endpoint? Set it up over here and then keep the connection as is when I travel?
This is the way, I’ve been international for 5+ years now using ExpressVPN on my router.

That makes sense, will try to figure it out before I go. Thank you!
Not sure how Okta works, but if you’re not already using a vpn to connect to the pc, then you can just use a vpn software like NordVPN, without needing a vpn router box.
ExpressVPN is a service that you’d need to pay for. It costs around $150 a year. The GLI net routers can’t be bought on Amazon for around $50.
The router is already configured to support VPN services like ExpressVPN. You just have to enter in your credentials.
From there you can connect the router to any internet connection. It can even connect to other WiFi networks for its internet connection.
So whatever devices you connect to the GLI router’s WiFi will be encrypted via VPN. The VPN endpoints are in various countries and cities. So if you were to pick an endpoint in Miami, it would appear as though you were connecting to the internet in Miami.
So if you turn on your corporate VPN, it would tunnel through the router’s tunnel to your corporate LAN and it would appear as if you were connecting from Miami instead of abroad.
How is the quality over Vpn for Zoom calls, Google Meet, etc? Thanks! Also do you use anything to forward your US mobile number to your international mobile?
