Connecting TeamViewer via Amazon AWS to home computer

Hi all,

I’m trying to solve a problem. I’ve been using TeamViewer to establish a VPN to my home computer while at work. Today, it seems, my place of work decided it didn’t like TeamViewer anymore and blocked it. I’m not well-versed in Amazon AWS, but I was led to believe I might be able to use it to circumvent this problem, and so I made an account.

Ideally, I’d like to use TeamViewer because my computer at home is already running it and therefore I can connect to it today should I get TeamViewer working again. If that’s not possible, I’d love suggestions on how to continue using a VPN in the future.

Thanks for any help!

Unless I’m not understanding something, TeamViewer is a remote desktop tool, not a VPN.

You could try LogMeIn (web based remote access). If not, you can try to tunnel RDP or VNC through an SSH tunnel, but chances are if they’re blocking TeamViewer they won’t like that either… and encrypted traffic (especially on an SSH port) can raise some flags for your ITSec people.

They may have blocked the ports. You could just go ahead and get an RDP, and connect to it through your browser, or a separate client. But if the IT admins are a dick and block it all, you don’t really have any other option. You could just bring a tablet in, boot up a VPN and try to use that. But an RDP would be a good solution.

You’re right. I was conflating the two ideas.

It looks like LogMeIn could do the trick for now… If I’m ignorant of VPNs vs. remote desktop control, I’m really ignorant of how to use an SSH tunnel. Heard of them, but if you know of a good guide to start reading up on them, I’d appreciate it.

TeamViewer is blocked because it’s an “online meeting” utility. Google chat is also blocked, yet social media like Facebook isn’t. Their security policy is not the clearest. In the end, if I can set up a secure way to view and interact with my home desktop, I’ll be happy. Essentially, all I need to do is interact with one program that needs an internet connection to function, but because of our network settings, I can’t run at work.

Thanks for the reply!

I’ve been using the TeamViewer app on my phone since they blocked TeamViewer. A tablet would be a bit more conspicuous, but at least it would be easier to use.

I’m looking into the Chrome Remote Desktop. Have you had any experience with it, by any chance?
